Penguins center Sidney Crosby met with Dr. Michael Collins of UPMC Tuesday and is starting his summer program of off-ice workouts. He will be joined by his long-time personal trainer for the next 2-3 weeks as he works back into his routine in Cole Harbor, Nova Scotia, according to Penguins general manager Ray Shero.

“I met with Sid Wednesday before he left for home and talked to Dr. Collins,” Shero said. “(Crosby) will resume his workouts and get back into his program in Cole Harbor.”

Collins is the UPMC specialist who has been monitoring Crosby's condition since he suffered a concussion in January.

Crosby, who spent the past three weeks on vacation, will not start on-ice workouts until late July or early August, which is his normal offseason workout schedule.

"Everything will be closely managed by Dr. Collins in terms of his progression leading up to him getting on the ice later in the summer per his usual routine,” Shero said.

Not to be a downer here, but how effective do we think he really will be after a 8 month layoff?

The guy had barely had a day off in 10 years, now he hasn't even been able to any cardio or anything in a long time.

Conditioning could be an issue.

I think if there's a player in the league who can take a 8 month layoff and come back as strong as ever, it's Sid. I don't know if he will, but I know he can.

If his brain can get with the program and stop being all hurt, he'll be fine. As long as the concussive symptoms stay away, he's the hardest working guy in the league (that's a personal opinion, but I seriously believe it) and I fully believe he'll get back to form over the summer as long as his head is healthy.

I don't worry about the conditioning component of Sid's recovery, the kid is a relentless worker (I mean, Crosby never stops, right?).

What I worry about is the next time he takes a big hit - Will he be sidelined indefinitely again? There are reports that the 4-man committee (Shanny, Nieuwy, Stevie Y, and Rob Blake) are meeting in Vancouver to discuss refinements to Rule 48 as well as a blanket head-shot rule. We'll just have to wait-and-see what happens, but changes are definitely in the offing.

I hope that with a new regime we get new ideas in the making, and something actually happens. It's time to get rid of the grey area, and as much as players and fans may think it gets rid of some of the violence we love, just make it simple: no head shots at all. Zero tolerance. It's the only way it works.

Soft elbow and shoulder pads might help too.

Now a stupid article out in French media about Sid having 4 concussions in past 5 years, and some old Canadiens coach having special information on him? I dunno, I doubt this crap quite often. Ironic that it comes out after he's cleared.
