Mike DuBose, a former Alabama defensive lineman and head coach, is being treated for non-life threatening injuries after accidentally shooting himself.

The Opp (Alabama) Police Department did not give details of how the incident happened, only denying media reports that it was the result of a hunting accident. The police said the Covington County Sheriff’s Office has opened an investigation, according to WSFA.

WAAO-FM spoke to some of the coach’s family members, who said he was using a riding lawn mower at his father’s property when he was struck by the bullet. The family said the gun was for protection against snakes.

DuBose reportedly drove himself to the emergency room at Mizell Memorial Hopsital in Opp, Alabama, where he resides, and was transferred via helicopter to a hospital in Dothan. He is recovering from surgery, according to WSFA.

He played for coach Paul “Bear” Bryant as a defensive lineman for Alabama from 1972-74. They won the national championship in 1973.

DuBose worked with high school programs in the area, according to WSFA, and is an Opp High School alumnus
