It just seems to me that with the greater emphasis on player safety the refs are calling more penalties for roughing, spearing, and other types of illegal contact. Not only do these penalties cost teams 15 yards but the players are subject to fines and even ejections. Should these penalties be subject to automatic reviews the same as scoring and turnovers?

I was actually thinking the same thing! The rules make sense, but they're tough to enforce in real time by refs. I'm willing to spend a minute or two every time that this type of penalty might even be close in every game in order to both protect players and keep the games fair. It would only extend games by a couple of minutes and would prevent the horrible calls when there was a shoulder to shoulder hit that looked like helmet to helmet.

Send it back to the league office and have people with actual authority rule on the spot.

It would take less than a minute and be far better than 5 unearned personal foul calls a game.

It would slow the game down way too much, because you'd be reviewing every hit. Personal fouls call can happen on every damn play and well they just about do. No.

Only the ones they call on the spot.

So we are only making the refs more accountable? Not sure if that's going to make things better, because refs will stop making the calls and i don't think that will improve player safety for damn sure.

Unless you want it to be more physical and then i'd be like :yahoo:

Any personal foul call examined on the spot by the league office to determine if it is a legitimate penalty.

Accountability beyond that should not change, it is just insane how easy it is for an imaginary "helmet to helmet" to alter a game.

i agree, that's why i don't agree with the rule of a personal foul for a helmet to helmet hit. Players don't like getting knocked out and getting concussions, they don't like hitting heads but it's going to happen, let it go and make them realize it's a risk they are taking. If the football life styles not for you i'll completely understand if you don't want to play football.

Call it but spend 60 seconds letting the office double checking.

First off, its way too subjective of a call for instant replay, same reason why you can't challenge pass interference. And its not like these guys are getting fined right there on the spot. The NFL front office takes a close look at each play to determine whether a fine is appropriate and if so, how much.

A helmet to helmet hit is not subjective in replay. He either hit the helmet or he didn't. There's no grey area. However a lot of flags are being thrown for helmet to helmet when there's really no contact.

Last year's Seattle - SF game in December for example. Kam Chancellor lit up Vernon Davis on the sideline with a beautiful and legal shoulder hit to the chest but the way Davis's head snapped back they threw a flag for helmet contact.

While that hit was super sweet, it was still "hitting a defenseless player" and would have been flagged regardless

if they were gonna do that. it would have to come from up stairs to stop play & look at the call. Not just automatically review it.
But that could cause more penalties not less. If the ref isn't sure, he can throw the flag just because he knows they will review it if he is wrong. Could actually make the reffing worse not better. I do think though the league should get on the refs for mistakes after games. Drives me crazy when a BS call changes a game. Which is becoming more & more common.

Which is a whole other bucket of bullshit. No NFL player on the field should ever be "defenseless."

Here's another case in point.
[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EwlFm4LLTz4]carson palmer gets owned - YouTube[/ame]

The ref claimed Hardy led with his helmet. Hardy was fined $25,000 for the hit and the Panthers lost 15 yards. I think the fine was overturned on appeal but this could have been taken care of on the field. Even Palmer later said the hit was legal.

Personally, I am amazed how often the refs get it right and replay proves it. But when you are talking about huge fines, ejections, etc. there should be some way to settle it during the game. Even if a player has to sit out and play continues while it is reviewed. I don't want the game to be slowed down but I don't want guys getting thrown out for playing within the rules.

then get rid of rules like this that are too subjective and and too harsh.

If that is a penalty I don't know what sport the NFL is, but it's not football.
