49ers Mailbag: When will James contribute?

Justin Smith was credited with just one tackle in the 49ers' 30-22 victory over the Packers. The 49ers coaches, after a review of the game film, came up with three tackles, three quarterback hits and four pressures.

Smith's contribution to the 49ers cannot be measured in statistics. He probably should've been in the NFL Defensive Player of the Year last season. But might not ever put up the gaudy statistics needed for such an award.

Don't let the statistics fool you. Smith was his usual dominant self against the Packers. In large part because of Smith and the constant double-teams he faced, NaVorro Bowman and Patrick Willis combined for 20 tackles. Smith also deserves a lot of credit for Aldon Smith's success.

Justin Smith, without question, is the guy who makes that 49ers defense tick. Unfortunately, there's no statistic available that proves that point.

San Francisco 49ers – Niner Insider Blog – SFGate.com Greg Cosell on Alex Smith: ‘He was decisive, he was efficient’

The part on the Packers game if anybody needs it in the future:

What did Cosell think of how Jim Harbaugh employed Smith in Week 1? Were the shackles off? Was there a loosening up of the playbook with the additions of wide receivers Randy Moss and Mario Manningham?

“I wouldn’t call it a loosening … and the score could have dictated this as well,” Cosell said. “But they ended up being about 50-50 run-pass ratio (32 runs, 26 passes). I thought Smith was very, very good on Sunday. He was decisive, he was efficient. I thought they did a terrific job with what I call receiver distribution and location. How they lined up their receivers to create match-ups and cause coverage confusion. And Alex Smith took advantage of all those situations beautifully. He was very aware. He played extremely well.”

** Last week, the Packers frequently used formations featuring four wide receivers and tight end Jermichael Finley, which brought the 49ers’ dime (6 DBs) package on the field. In the dime, the 49ers took out either Patrick Willis or NaVorro Bowman and subbed in cornerback Perrish Cox, who often covered Finely.
