Might only be for an inning or two, but...it's his first MLB start. Rays doing all the unconventional things they can
"The way that their lineup stacks generally speaking is very heavy right-handed at the top," manager Kevin Cash said when asked about the plan after Thursday's game.
"It allows us in theory to let Sergio to come in there and play the matchup game in the first, which is somewhat unheard of – up until Saturday anyway.
"Then Yarbs (typical starter Ryan Yarbrough) can, in theory, have the availability to get deeper in the game. There's no more secret about the third time through the order, everybody knows that. And that's kind of what this is about."
When was the last time a pitcher started back-to-back games?Romo struck out all three batters he faced in one inning of work. He is making back-to-back starts!

I thought about the whole ASB thing after I posted the question. Didn’t Bum technically start back-to-back games around the ASB a few years ago?Mr. Zack Greinke apparently.
He made a start, got ejected four pitches in
Started the next day, got shelled
Came back and started first game after ASB

More evidence that the w/l stat isn’t BS.Underrated aspect that caters to old-timers:
In a hypothetical scenario.......
Say Romo still goes 1 inning, then the "starter" Ryan Yarbrough goes 4.2 innings, but his pitch count gets too high. Rays are leading 4-0 when he leaves and go on to win the game 5-3.
Ryan Yarbrough gets credit for the win.
Again, hypothetically speaking, say the Rays and Yarbrough continue this over a full season and it goes relatively well; Yarbrough is in for the line win more often than not without having to get passed the 'five inning threshold'
Teams that are employing this strategy could probably care less about pitcher wins, but this thought just cropped into my head.
edit: also say Romo gives up a run, then Ryan Yarbrough goes on to dominate for 8 innings, giving up just 2 runs, but the Rays lose 3-0. Yarbrough wouldn't get credit for a tough luck loss, Romo would
