Give up Handzus & D prospect. But I don't think LA is going to be sellers/buyers at this point.

listening to CBC guys today on radio thinks they will be buyers they are young, 1 point out of a playoff spot and need scoring this year. Semin does that and will be 1st line which is what he wants.

cap space is really tight for LA, don't think they can afford anything over 2 million. They'd have to dump quite a few vets/prospects to get a high value player. Lombardi would be a fool to take such a big risk.

I hadnt realized they were close to the cap that is not good for them considering them have a young roster but I guess Smitty will be off the books by the time a few of those guys are ready for teh raises.

Trade deadline is about 5 weeks away. I think the Kings need to reach at least 68 pts, 13-7 whatever it comes out, but Kings need to hit that number to have a good chance of making it into the playoffs.

If not, then might shift into the selling mode. Handzus, Sturm & Ponikorovsky all could be useful tools in a playoff team for some picks/prospects. We probably get a useful player back from the right team, but I would keep my expectations low on that.

Williams is another UFA, I think they should keep him for at least another 3 years. Smyth probably stays, would be good for him to finish his contract out in LA. 6mill on his contract is a little too much for teams to take him at this point.

jeff carter is a former 40 goal scorer, and maybe i'm mistaken, but is a much better all-around forward than semin.. he's got a $5mil cap hit (5.2 hit kicks in next year).. maybe i'm just spoiled and carter has a great contract?

Depends. Carter is probably a better defensive forward, (though Semin has improved(, but Carter also doesn't have the explosive ability that Semin does. Semin can take over and win a game. Career gpg/ppg for Carter and Semin is 0.39/0.74 and 0.45/0.92 respectively. So Semin is stronger in production, but his health has been an issue.

Carter's contract seems like good value for the Flyers, but the two are not mutually exclusive. Carter's contract can be a good value without Semin's having bad value.

Every team has great and poor value in contracts on their team. For the Flyers, Carter seems like a good price, though IMO, Hartnell is overpaid. You can find examples like that on every team.

Even if Semin is overpaid, it's only going to hurt us for one season, and that is assuming he isn't traded, which I'd put at 50/50 next year.

Decent deal because it's short, but I don't think he brings enough to the table to merit the money. Sure, his contract is in line with other 40-goal scorers, but that's really all his game entails. He's not physical, he's not responsible in his own end, he's not a leader. He just scores goals. And while that's valuable, it's, in general, not sustainable. I don't mean that goal scoring isn't sustainable, I just mean that goal scoring with no other prominent strengths isn't. He can stickhandle and he can shoot, but look at where that got Alexi Kovalev for the bulk of his career.

A player like him is best served on a one-year deal, just to make sure he can play consistently to his talent despite his shortcomings, and I imagine the fact that it was only a one-year deal is why the money is so high, but I've got to think he's more of a $5.5 million kind of guy.

Right now the Caps need him BAD!!

I remember when Buddy Ryan said all Cris Carter did was score touchdowns before the Eagles let him go. Uhh Buddy that's the object of the game.

Okay, not a leader, dead on. But the other stuff, he's actually improved his game a lot in that regard this year. He's played on the penalty kill a bunch this year and he is top 10 in the league in takeaways per game.

He does take some dumb penalties though.
