Despite being given the department award for teaching, my teaching this semester was assessed as average, so that's a bit curious. But whatever, it means I'm not fired, at least.

My review packet was glowing, though, except for a small camp of students who really hated me, so I'll take that as a sign I did a good job.

It's kind of amazing how the students who felt my grading was too harsh were also the students who felt I was condescending. It always works out that way.

And also how the number of students who thought my feedback was insufficient was the same as the number of students who never corrected the mistakes I made the most obvious comments on to correct, like, "Label your axes."

I mean, perhaps it's my fault for not properly conveying the importance of proper scaling on plots, or the use of unambiguous and correct axis labels and units, but I thought my examples from pseudoscience blogs, pointing to those same errors my students made and explaining how those errors led to dishonest data presentation should have done the trick.

That they didn't already realize this, though, is a failing of Arizona public schools, largely, I have to suspect. I shouldn't have had to develop those skills in them. They're the fundamental science skills which should have been developed in high school. But it's still frustrating that they both 1) seemingly ignored me when I taught them, and 2) complained about losing points for poor data presentation when not doing the thing the worksheet explicitly told them to do right there in the question.

I was working in Houston in late 1997 - Price of a gallon of gas was 79 cents.
