Everyone is entitled to an ID, just as everyone is entitled to register to vote if eligible.
Honestly, not trying to be an asshole, but read all or portions of the 4th Circuit ruling that struck down NC's voter ID (and other provisions) law wherein the court said that this law "target[ed] African-Americans with almost surgical precision”. It's a decision that is absolutely heart-breaking and horrifying that it had to be issued in 2016. That decision was allowed to stand by the SCOTUS without review.

When they're making laws that don't seem to even be addressing a real issue - as study after study has shown - and you can show that some of the laws were deliberate attempts to disenfranchise voters of a specific race, the benefit of the doubt is lost.

Let me add another factor to this which should be considered as well - election workers.

Let's assume it's easy to get an ID, it's free, and nobody has any problems.

You still have an army of thousands of election workers sent out to do a job for a couple days every other year on a couple hours of training. People make mistakes in their work. Voters with legit IDs are sent home by workers who make a mistake. In most jobs, you correct mistakes over time. In elections, every day is the "grand opening" complete with the types of system issues and worker errors that come along with such events.

So in addition to solving a problem that doesn't really exist, you've now additionally hurt thousands of voters who had done exactly what they are supposed to do because they are at the behest of a temporary/volunteer workforce that are, well... human.

Excellent point. Many of us are talking about this in the abstract simply from a logistical standpoint. The intent behind the actions (see: passing laws just before election, PA representative who said "this will get Republicans elected, etc.) belies an understanding that this WILL impact certain voters.

Yeah, great news on a decision WalMart made on pay scales that must have been in planning for months if not years before the tax law (which hasn't taken effect yet) was passed.

All good news is because of me! All bad news is fake!

I was actually just about to comment on this. Wal-Mart has been raising their wages gradually over the past couple years, and were most certainly going to do it again this year irrespective of tax reform, and bonuses are always given out based on the year's performance, not anything legislative.

Businesses don't spend money they think they'll have later, and they never spend money they don't expect to return value. To say this was the result of the tax bill is obviously disingenuous, but of course they want public support for legislation which favors them, so why not attribute it to the tax bill? They don't care that they're lying, they just want more money.

I'm pretty sure you don't need an ID here. I think if you just turn up with a piece of official mail with your name and address on it you can't be denied your right to vote.

And as for the elections running just fine? Well, that's not the point. The point is that certain people don't get to vote. With voter turn out often under 50% in Canada, can we be sure that the elections are truly "free"? I'm not sure I'd make that bet.
You don't need them to vote but you need it to register to vote. You can show up with two pieces of mail, any ID, health card, etc.

I pulled this from the ruling:

"The legislature amended the bill to exclude many of the alternative photo IDs used by African-Americans (and) retained only the kinds of IDs that white North Carolinians were more likely to possess,"

This would indicate that the problem wasn't so much that it was a voter ID law but more that they weren't accepting of particular ID's that would be fine for pretty much any other ID requirement. This is very different than "all voter ID laws are discriminatory" as many on the left would have people believe. This is actually filtering through certain types of ID to make it harder for one particular eligible voting block to vote.

I don't think there's anything wrong with a voter requiring ID either at the very least during the registration phase so long as there is a sufficient number of possible ID types.

iirc (maybe Im wrong) ... you get a voter registration card in the mail that lists what polling location you go to and you can take that and thats all they look at ... no id ( i think :noidea: )

my sister in law lived with us before she made the move to Seattle 5 years ago ... we still get (got - last election) voter registration cards mailed to us with her name on them

When you're already registered, yes. If you're a first-time voter (for example, new citizen) you have to register with ID.

Only reason I know this is because I did it for my dad ten years ago or so (he had been a citizen since the 90s but never registered to vote then wanted to).

so i could get all dolled up in my best cross dressing gear (borrowed from comeds) and go vote using my sister in laws registration card for a protectionist candidate who will build a wall and never let my brother in law back in the country

Long overdue, IMO. Americans are ruining this place.

/I need to get a fake citizenship card for a certain Mexican-American first.

Let me know how this works out, because I would like to prevent mine from ever leaving Virginia.

In some places you need identification, though address verification is usually the requirement that must be met. Not the same as ID. It depends on the state law governing. States handle this differently.

Hmmm sounds like an alpha male to me. Maybe a presidential run in the offing? How is he on snatch grabbing?

I'd imagine it's been a decade or more since he has seen one in real life. He is probably out of practice.
