huge would be an understatement. i was thrilled when he was hired and i love his style. now that style is going to be changed when he leaves, which could be a massive issue. hopefully it doesn't happen.

fox is rumored to be done with the bears. if he was willing to accept a lesser role, he'd be an amazing replacement. but then again, how long would he stay around.. one year?

Rex Ryan?
Fox may not get another HC job for awhile, as he doesn't have a great record.
Other names:
Jeff fisher
Spagnola
Pagano
Bowles
Gus Bradley
Marv Lewis
+ many other DC's that may get swept out the door.

I suspect he is as good as gone.

That said, I don't think he is as great as many people think. I think our defense is working well because Howie did a stellar job of acquiring players. I think someone else could command this defense, and do OK, but it would have to be a 4-3 defensive mind, as that is the talent we have. Most of the guys Old Duke listed are 3-4 defense guys.

This opening will be very attractive to defensive coaches looking for a job, and there should be a fair number of them.

There are rumors of Spags coming back to Philly. At one point he was a hot name but his rep has really dropped off in recent years, so not sure what I think of this. That said, he is a 4-3 guy who has Philly ties and of course did well with the Giants when they beat the Pats by capitalizing on their pass rush, the strength of our team.

Unless the new NY coach wants Spags, I think he come here. It just makes the most sense.

Maybe he stays? I mean we should be a SB contender next year if we don't lose four of our best players again.

Anyone that would switch us to a 3-4 (pagano) shouldn't be an option.

In this scenario I'd be really happy with getting Spags back as DC

John Fox was fired. If Schwartz leaves Fox should be our first target. No fucking around. He'll keep this defense humming.

The rumors also include talk that Vic Fangio, Fox's coordinator, would be an option for us. But I think he is more of a 3-4 guy.

I wouldn't want him as a head coach. It'd suck to lose him as coordinator.

Schwartz unfortunately, is as good as gone. Welcome home Spags!

Spags seems to be the best fit - if I'm not mistaken, prior to Schwartz being hired, Pederson actually wanted Spags to run his defense. But NY would not let him go to a division rival for the same position.

Fox would be great too - don't forget he ran a 4-3 in Carolina and they had a kick-ass defense for a few years starting with a strong D-Line (Peppers, Rucker, Jenkins, Buckner). Seems to have the right temperament for Philly too, I've always been a fan of his.

Fangio has always been a traditional 3-4 guy; a very good coach but to change schemes again defensively at this point would be detrimental to this team. The personnel we have is best suited to stay in the 4-3. Todd Bowles would have IMO also been a good candidate if the Jets and he parted ways.

Those three I would be ok with. Which one will we get?

going to a NFC east rival is going to be a doubly tough loss. HUGE impact. NYG have our number as it is. They just don't stay with what works. When Eli goes to the fast release, it neutralizes our pass rush, and he moves the ball up and down the field at will. Then factor in they completely exposed our CB's weakness to the double move, and we are already in trouble. Now this too????? It's just a matter of NYG getting the personnel - they already know us too well. I worry about them more than DAL or WAS.

I agree 100% with enut, anyone running a 3-4 shouldn't even be an option. Especially after all the money we just put into our front 4.

The one most impressive thing about Doug is he knows his limitations and strengths and hires to his weaknesses. He will definitely hire an experienced coordinator with an extensive record of success that he can just hand off the D to with little oversight. The good thing is that there are many good ones on the market. I'm not too worried if Schwartz leaves. I also don't really believe this Schwartz to the Giants is done. He doesn't have much shine as a HC candidate IMO.
