A quick roundup of the contenders closers:

Name Team SV SV%
McGee SF 29 88
Jensen LA 28 85
Melancon SD 34 87
Hader MIL 27 96
Garrett CIN 7 64
Smith ATL 28 88
Castillo TB 15 75
Pressly HOU 19 91
Chapman NYY 24 86
Hendriks CHW 29 83
Barnes BOS 24 80
Trivino OAK 21 84

AS tough as I've been on McGee, he's tied for third in save pct. He's not elite. There really are only two elite closers this year, which is not what I would have expected. Pressly is really good, but not many chances.

Just saw this piece from MLB.com and wondered how berserk the Phillies' version of tzill is going this year:

30
Blown saves by the Phillies. While this number is large, it is not yet truly bonkers. It's the ninth-most all-time.
Remember, though: We’ve got some games left. Despite dramatically reshaping a bullpen that last year posted the highest ERA in 90 years, the Phillies stand a real chance of climbing into this top eight:
Most blown saves in a season
1. 2004 Rockies, 34
2. 2002 Rangers, 33
3. (tie) 1973 Braves, 32
1996 White Sox, 32
5. (tie) 2006 Royals, 31
2008 Mariners, 31
1998 Cardinals, 31
2008 Cardinals, 31

The flat count of blown saves can be misleading, though. Not all BSs are losses. A single game can have multiple BSs. Some BSs are due to errors, not pitching.

Having a lot is bad, sure. But getting too caught up in them is a bit of a fools errand, imho.

I am more concerned with HRs given up, walk rates, hard contact (probably equates to OPS against?), inherited runner rate, WHIP…

Sure, context matters. That's why I prefer my homemade CPBS metric. Saves blown in the 8th inning and beyond. Average team has about 6 a year. Giants have had, IIRC, 17.

How many CPBS against do the Giants have this year?
