In every other sport you feel like you're team at least has a chance ever offaeason

In the MLB that's just not the case

Baseball can change whatever rules they want to to "appeal to the fans" but until you institute a salary cap ( or at least an addition tax like the NBA uses ) people just aren't going to care

Its fun to go watch the Globetrotters once. No one wants to see them play the a Generals 162 times
You don’t necessarily have to institute a salary cap, just need to add punitive and rewards. Much like how they changed to wear the ROTY nets the team a draft pick.

I want an NFL style cap. Make it fair across the board. Then let the best management team win it with team building. Footballs only problem is they protect the QB more than any other position giving whoever has the top QB a huge advantage to build a Dynasty.

The following comes from The Athletic:

...Neither were the Seattle Mariners, a franchise with a rich history in Japan and a current pitching program that is viewed as best in class. The Mariners had featured Ichiro Suzuki in their introductory material, highlighting Seattle’s welcoming environment for players coming over from Nippon Professional Baseball.

We can't pretend to know what motivates each athlete and what shapes their decision-making process, but it's disappointing that the M's couldn't even get a sit-down with Sasaki. Regardless, it's good to know that they enlisted the help of Ichiro, one of the best players in baseball history, and that he obliged in helping the organization.

The Mariners have had plenty of success in cultivating Japanese talent, from Ichiro to Kazuhiro Sasaki to Kenji Johjima.

If a cap is ever going to happen, it is going to have to be NBA style more than the NFL. Contracts will always be guaranteed in baseball. You can have a Larry Bird/franchise tag. But problem with baseball compared to those other sports is draft picks in those sports are expected to impact the team but in baseball you got 3 years at a minimum for most picks. It’d be nice is baseball could copy the NFL in terms of salary slotting. If you are 15th player drafted you get X, not we are going to take the 25th best player so we can give our 2nd round picks more money to sign out of high school.

It’s like the Mariners have gone heavy into picks for position players cause they have the pitching staff. But once the whole collection of prospects are up, the pitching staff will be gone. It’s why the number 3 pick this year for the Mariners won’t be the best available player, it’s going to be the best college pitcher left on the board.

They can still be guaranteed and have an NFL cap. One really isn't related to the other. It is just two different ways of running their respective business's. In NFL there is usually part of the contract that is guaranteed. If they were smart, they would push harder for fully guaranteed money.

MLB has basically a cap on draft picks. They have slotted suggestions I guess you could call it, but overall, it is a pot.

The #3 pick will most likely be a college pitcher because that is who most likely will be the best player available. If the high school kid goes first and the college outfielder goes second, then one of about three college pitchers will be the next best. Of course, so much can change between now and the draft. Injuries, drops in rank and fast risers can change that.

Thats why I used the NBA over NFL because of the guaranteed contracts. But that does bring up the question of the minor leagues which I have no idea how to square that up unless Manfred gets his way and abolishes the minor leagues and make college baseball become the minors

I know the draft picks have the semi cap. I just think it’s dumb and should be like the NFL or NBA where the player gets X regardless. And all players have to enter the draft, no more of this international signing crap.

My point with the pitcher is it doesn’t matter who is available, it’s going to be a college pitcher to fit the timeline they have with the crop of position players.

That would be stupid...so it might happen.

100% agree.

I got your point. I was just saying the BPA will be a pitcher unless something crazy happens during the season. I am okay with it being the best pitcher. I always believe the hitters will come from the international signings and pitching from the draft. I think that is a good blueprint unless it is just a stud of a hitter that you can't say no to.

Honestly I think he views the Mariners as a team that won't spend to put a winning product on the field. He just signed and has witnessed Dodgers spending to stay in the WS hunt but Seattle hasn't made any moves. Seems like an easy choice.

Well that’s the rumor that Manfred wants to abolish 99% of the minor leagues and go the NFL route where college is their farm system. The AFL may be the only real American minor leagues except maybe a AAA kind of league.

The mocks so far don’t mean much to me. So much can change especially for pitching since it seems like more and more pitchers are getting injured. Plus outside of Gilbert and Kirby the M’s seem to love college pitchers who have terrible seasons. Plus I’m scarred with college pitchers because of Danny Hultzen and now Hancock. If they are 15-20 range then fine but they have terrible luck picking high.

Cheap ass bastards. That is just stupid.

Hultzen was more of a negative due to injuries. That is hard to predict in most cases.

Hancock's draft, 2020, was sad. Best 1st rounder that year is probably Crochet. Just not much there.

All a crapshoot in my mind.

With Hultzen, I wasn’t impressed at all with him and one of my big, not sure the word, when it comes to college pitchers cause they are “close”. I prefer best player regardless. If you have a need, trade for it instead of just prospect hoarding. But I’m also not a GM so it’s easy for me to say that.

It isn’t a knock on Hancock, it just seems every time the Mariners draft high and it’s a pitcher, it turns into a bust. Which I’m still not calling Hancock a bust, doesn’t look he will ever be an ace, but I don’t think it’s fair that people talk about him like he is just some AAAA pitcher. It’s not his fault that he was drafted into an organization that doesn’t have a spot for him to sink or swim. He got hurt then Miller and Woo shined and haven’t looked back.

Ya I have no idea to this day what Hultzen was or could have been.

Hancock is a #5 SP. Not what you might want from a 1st rounder, but not a bust like some. At least not yet.
