yeah, I just got an alert from the Province.
achilles tendon tear, could be 3 months, floor hockey in finland (wtf???), not confirmed by Canucks.

what's the running count on career injuries? are we up to about 45 now?

45 with Canucks alone that made him miss multiple games
20 with the Senators

crazy.

so.... cap-wise, as we are right up to (over) the cap anyways, the long-term injury replacement for Salo should come completely off.
so there's our $3.5 million we need.

assuming $2.5 mill for Raymond, and with Hodgson in the lineup, we have $10k left over :D

Henrik Sedin ($6.100m) / Daniel Sedin ($6.100m) / Mikael Samuelsson ($2.500m)
Ryan Kesler ($5.000m) / Manny Malhotra ($2.500m) / Alexandre Burrows ($2.000m)
Jannik Hansen ($0.825m) / Cody Hodgson ($1.666m) / Mason Raymond ($2.500m)
Victor Oreskovich ($0.575m) / Rick Rypien ($0.550m) / Darcy Hordichuk ($0.775m)
/ / Tanner Glass ($0.625m)

DEFENSEMEN
Dan Hamhuis ($4.500m) / Keith Ballard ($4.200m)
Kevin Bieksa ($3.750m) / Christian Ehrhoff ($3.100m)
Alexander Edler ($3.250m) / Shane O'Brien ($1.600m)
Andrew Alberts ($1.050m) / Aaron Rome ($0.750m)

GOALTENDERS
Roberto Luongo ($5.333m) /Cory Schneider ($0.900m)

Guys it doesn't work like that. You get cap relief, you don't cap clearance. There is a myth out there that you get the full cap back, you don't get that full space back.

You get the room equivalent to the player that you are replacing him with. In this case it's Rome. So we are in theory, allowed to be over the cap by 750k prorated to whatever days it is until Salo comes back at which point we have to comply with the cap.

This is a devastating injury from both our d corps and from a cap perspective. Whatever 1.x million we had left to play with is now gone as well. So the end result is that Bieksa is most likely still on the block and we have to with Rome/Alberts as our 5/6 for the start of the season.

Also, let's take a step back here. The injury occurred at the latest this week, July 23 let's say. Some reports saying it happened in late June; but let's say it happened today. That takes us to October 23. Give him 3 weeks to get in game shape and he misses a month at the most of the season.

says who? not meaning to sound like a dick, I'm just curious, how is that determined?
Is it automatically the lowest paid d-man?

and yeah, i know 3 months would bring it only to late-ish Oct, just being reactionary :p

lol not taken as a dick......a very fair question but it's in the CBA that it's a replacement player, not one that is already a regular on your team or that would be another way around the cap. and because I'm sure Bobblehead Bettman and crew are chomping at the bit to nail us on another method of salary cap circumvention after Luongo's contract.

it's the call up you would have to replace him. in this case, the only one you could make an argument for is Rome/Alberts.

with all of that said, the only time i know of this happening in in-season and Nonis confirmed it a few years back on 1040 on the way it works, let's hope in the off season the rules are different.

SIGH ........ Please please please move Bieksa still , I can't handle another year with him getting over 15 mins a game of ice time.

I swear this granchise is cursed . Everytime a string of good happens some kind of a freak thing occurs.

This is no shocker and we all knew this would happen at least once this year. It should in no way shape or form change the mentality that we need to trade one of our D-men. I would be fully comfortable icing a d line of...

Ballard/Hamhuis
Ehrhoff/Edler
SOB/Alberts

I mean come on guys last year with all the injuries we had a lineup of...

Ehrhoff/Edler
SOB/Rome
Baumer/Oberg

So dug some more into the CBA. It says that you can bring in player(s) up to player's salary. And if that puts you over the cap, that's ok. Noticed that it's plural.

So in-season, I can see how Nonis said it only covers the call-up because at that point you already are carrying the max players. So you can only bring up the one.

But now it's offseason, and if I'm reading this correctly. His 3.5 isn't wiped, but the portion that he misses is. Which in theory allows Canucks to keep Bieksa and Alberts, etc.

Keep in mind that we all think/work on a yearly basis, but the NHL works on a daily basis. Hence the constant back to the farm and back up to the big club in 2 days thing. So Bieksa's per day rate is equal to Salo's per day rate........man this stuff is confusing.
