Kevin Vickerson cut by Denver Broncos - ESPN

Best of luck to Vickerson....I always felt that he truly gave his all for the Bronco's. Very sad to see him go

Agreed. I really like Big Vick. Good, versatile player who gives a lot of effort. Feel pretty sure that he can still help a team if he's recovered from injury. Guess the good news is that we're apparently keeping Unrein, who is younger and also a player who has been effective.

Kind of a drag, but I'd rather we kept Unrein if it came between the two. Vick did play his ass off for us though. Somebody else will scoop him up.

That guy is class act. Dallas needs talent, not that I would wish it on him. He will a job.

Hate to see us losing talent (and heart), but the good news is it means we are loaded along the D-line.

Thanks and good luck to Vick. Hope he finds a home on an NFC team.

Saints cut Champ Bailey.

Absolutely that is a sad turn of events. All-time great Bronco. Fully expect him to go into both the Broncos Ring of Fame and the Pro Football HOF. Best complete CB I ever saw play.

The writing was on the wall with the emergence of Williams and Austin who outplayed Vick and essentially a similar talented, younger, more versatlie, and slightly cheaper Unrein.

Oh and the Champ situation is sad, but it does eventually happen.

I was biting my nails all morning worrying on whether PMFM was going to make the roster or not. He is one of my favorites.

I think we all were! Glad to see such a tough worker make the team.

Couple of surprises in my mind...A little surprised that Garland made it over Painter. With Painter being a draft pick and teams wanting him last year I thought the team could have easily snuck Garland on to the practice squad while having Painter in the 53 and then just waiting for an injury kind of thing.

At the same time though hearing what Garland had to say after he found out he made the 53 I could not be more excited for this kid. Somebody asked him if he was going to go out and celebrate tonight and his answer was I'm going to go sit in the hot bath then cold bath while watching film on the Colts. His NFL dream just came true and his reaction is to just keep working. Very glad to have those kind of guys on our team.

Another surprise was Carter over Ihenacho...Not sure how I feel about this pick. Ihenacho and Vickerson were both starters for this team that couldn't even make it as back ups this year. I guess that shows the depth of this team but I thought Ihenacho with having all those starts would maybe get the nod over Carter in the hopes that Ihenacho could develop. Throw in Moore and Carter both have contracts that run out after this year so the Safety position could get a bit thin. I am one of those I am torn on Carter. He brings the best hands of any Corner that we have and can make the big splash interception but he can also make the dumbest mistakes on the field. People quickly forget that on the Rahim Moore botched play in the playoffs a couple of years ago it was Carter who was actually supposed to be covering the receiver and he just gave up on the play. Anyway I guess for a 6th corner on the team Carter is a pretty good choice. Don't think anybody has a better 6th corner than us.

Final surprise was choosing Corey Nelson over that of Zac Dysert. I was one hoping we would only keep 2 QB's this year but just didn't think Elway would take that chance especially with how much I have heard he is a big Dysert fan. I'm glad he did though. Nelson gives us not only depth for the LB position with Trevathan out the first month but gives us that speed on special teams. Something last year that really did hurt is because of some lack of depth because of injuries our Special Teams play was just down right terrible. I'm hoping with this added depth maybe just maybe our Special Teams cover units will be a bit better.

According to the first note beneath this depth chart, Garland's ability to play both guard spots and center weighed in his favor:

The Denver Broncos release their week one depth chart - Mile High Report

I think your last point, about room for improvement on special teams is a good one that tends to be overlooked. Wasn't much of an issue last year, since so many of our games were blowouts, but our kick and punt coverage wasn't good. Facing a tougher schedule this year, we could be in more close games in which special teams are more of a factor.

I would also venture to guess PS eligibility also weighed in on the decision. Both Painter and Garland are raw and talented, so at this it is tit for tat really. Plus, Painter was going to be poached by SF because SF was in a tight spot due to injury, not so sure they are in that tight of a spot this year as they released a very decent backup that can backup almost every spot on the line in Adam Snyder.

This surprised me also, I figured we would keep Ihenacho over either Carter or Nelson. With the very real possibility of running bid Dime and Nickel sets (3 Saftey), I would figure they would be keeping a bit more depth at S. The thing is though with the new PS rules, Ihenacho is PS eligible and with his coverage skills being very exposed down the road last year, it does not surprise me at all. He needs a bit more development and plus, Q Carter can backup both SS and FS.

TBH, I was hoping for Louis Young over T Carter also, but then again, this might also be another PS eligibility thing. T Carter is not going to be dressing on game day and it is a moot point because if he does need it be activated because of injury, the team will have a week to figure out what they really want to do. T Carter does have some ability and they may just want another year to see if that ability finally translates to the field.

BTW, the new PS rule I am talking about is the one that says a person that has no more than 2 accrued seasons can go onto the PS. That means a whole lot of people can now go on that could not before (Wolfe, Oz, Andrew Luck, and on and on), which is why I am guessing certain people got cut and certain people made the roster.

Oh and could some please explain to me why you can only dress 46 when you have 53 on the roster? I have never understood why this rule is even in place. Is it an archaic thing that was supposed to be for something in past or what?

That rule I just found out yesterday, which I believe was announced by the NFL yesterday also or I just did not understand it when they announced the rule changes with PS last week.

Yeah I really like this new practice squad deal. I think it gives teams a bit more freedom if a guy is forced to start because of injuries but isn't actually quite ready and needs that extra year to develop on the practice squad.
