Datsyuk, 37, told the Detroit Free Press that he plans to retire from the NHL and go back to Russia after this season. Redwings confirmed the story, Pavel stated he would do what he could to help with the cap hit, but wants to be home and be with his teenage daughter.

:pout:

Gonna miss watching him play. :sigh:
yeah, I'll miss watching him play...one of my all-time favs. But as a guy that's a geo-bachelor in the Navy and only gets to see his family occassionaly on weekends for almost that last two years or so, I certainly will not begrudge the guy wanting to be closer to his daughter. Truthfully, after all he's done for this franchise, I won't even begrudge him for any one year cap hit either (though I wouldn't necessarily care for it).

Perhaps not a surprise as he turns 38 in July but what a good career he had.

Kind of disappointing that he's not going to finish out the last year of his contract and will leave the wings with 7.5 mil of dead cap sapce. but there's still a glimmer of hope

couldn't they just mutually agree to terminate the contract? if Datsyuk is true to his word that he's willing to do what it takes to not hurt the Wings, all he has to do is walk away from 5.5 mil in salary right?

My understanding, going back to the Luongo fiasco, was no they cannot mutually terminate. I may be wrong.

mm ya good point. i remember Luongo saying he wished he could just terminate the contract. that's an interesting rule, though i guess it would be a pretty serious loophole if you could sign guys with a bunch of 600k years on the end under the assumption that you'd mutually terminate.

I think some of this goes back to the 35+ contract stuff too. Basically you're stuck with it if you risk signing an old guy to a long deal, etc. Unless you're the Flyers and rules don't apply.

How could he play in the KHL with a year left on his NHL contract? I thought the NHL/KHL had an agreement to prevent that? Does he need Detroit's permission?

I don't see how he could do LTIR anyway, unless he significantly injured himself in the playoffs.
