Datsyuk, 37, told the Detroit Free Press that he plans to retire from the NHL and go back to Russia after this season. Redwings confirmed the story, Pavel stated he would do what he could to help with the cap hit, but wants to be home and be with his teenage daughter.

:pout:

Gonna miss watching him play. :sigh:

From a cap hit perspective, it's interesting...they can put him on LTIR, but he'd have to not play anywhere for a year. If he plays, his $7.5M is on the books. They can also pull a Pronger and trade him to a team who needs cap floor help, but those teams are a bit harder to find these days, and $7.5M is a LOT, and I imagine that team would likely want something else in the deal to sweeten it. Really shocked by this (well, shocked before the rumors of like two weeks ago)...just thought he'd play out his contract.

Of course this still could be Pavel playing with the media, which he does do, but saying "I think I'm done playing in the NHL" pretty much does-it.

Sad to see him go, one of the all time greats.

I really hope he doesn't play in the KHL. I mean, I wouldn't mind watching the Wings have cap trouble, but I wouldn't want to watch him sully his legacy like that.

I read that he was going to likely play for Yekaterinberg in the KHL.

This likely won't hurt the wings too badly cap-wise. They have some space as it is, enough to target Stamkos if that's their goal (and I'm sure they're going to take a stab at it) and only a token bunch of RFA's.

It was painfully obvious he doesn't have much gas left in the tank after coming back from injury this season. I think I saw him lose the puck more in the last 3 months, than I have in the last 10 yrs. I agree with forty_three, he ought hang his skates up on a relative higher note, rather than deteriorate even more than he has.

Hope the Wings can find a way to get around the cap hit.

LTIR seems pretty much impossible. Isn't there a clause requiring they prove a real injury?

And I don't think they can do it Tim Thomas style and suspend him if he files official retirement papers instead of failing to report, which is what TT technically did.

Nah, it was a three year deal. Signed at 35.

I think you checked the wrong contract. He had one year left and it was a 3 year deal.

^^Mea Culpa. I read it wrong. The 7 years was his last contract. 2 years left on his current.

I miss capgeek.Their layout was better.

My guess is Ken Holland puts in a call to Dean Lombardi for some cap advice in the near future.

Maybe he can dump the cost on Detroit's taxpayers?
