As I'm a surly bastard lately, watching shitty pitching in the playoffs and wishing major ill on Scott Cousins, I thought I'd turn to some possibilities for SabeySabes this offseason:

1. BJ Upton, CF -- Projects out to about 17 HR 66 RBI and 3.2 WAR. Entering his final arb year. Probable cost about $9MM plus we'd have to give up something valuable (Chez?) to acquire.
2. Coco Crisp, CF -- 6 HR, 35 RBI 40 SB and 2.0 WAR. Free agent, and should cost about $15/2 years.
3. Michael Cuddyer, Utility -- 22 HR 82 RBI 1.7 WAR. Free agent, costing around $12/2.
4. Alexei Ramirez, SS -- 16 HR 69 RBI 12 SB 3.6 WAR. Four more years at $32.5 under contract. Would probably take Chez and Belt.
5. Juan Pierre, LF -- 1 HR 43 RBI 40 SB 1.2 WAR. Free agent, $5M/1 year.

Just some rosterbatory thoughts.....

Some reclamation projects:

Grady Sizemore, CF- should be taking a 1 year deal somewhere, maybe 1+1 if he reaches a certain number of PA's.

Connor Jackson, LF- Injury history, but back in 2008 was looking like he was on his way to a very nice career. Still only 30

Jonny Gomes, LF- Coming off a very down year in Cincy/Washington, probably seeking a 1 year deal.

1, 2, and 3. seem doable. I like 2 over 1. If we reload with Crisp and Cuddyer and get a full year of decent production from Huff, Belt, Posey, Panda we are ready to roll.

As the resident White Sox expert I can tell you 4 is a no go, he's arguably the 2nd best SS in the AL and one of their main guys, and they aren't rebuilding.

Pierre is AWFUL. Terrible fielder with a noodle arm, steals bases but gets caught A LOT. Never walks, no power. Pass.

Really, Sizemore can be had for a 1 or 1+1? That seems like a better idea than others at CF.

Agreed, if it's that cheap, I wouldn't mind taking a flier on him.

How much could he ask for? he's played 104 games the last 2 years, 210 the last 3. I would be all for the risk involving him.

With Cabrera in the outfield, what's next? Re-sign Beltran? Sign Crisp? Are either DeJesus and/or Sizemore options for one year contracts?

Would an outfield tandem of Beltran/Cabrera/DeJesus-Sizemore/Schierholtz be okay defensively and productive offensively?

Is it realistic to assume that Crisp will be offered as much in 2012 as DeJesus and Sizemore combined making the gamble on bounce back years from DeJesus and Sizemore worth the risk?

I think one of the four are still in play. Which one depends more on Beltran's demands. If they are too high, I think Sabean will take a flier on Sizemore, and possibly, settle on DeJesus/Crisp, if Grady wants to head elsewhere. Keep in mind that Brandon Belt will need a lot of reps in LF, if Huff plays moderately well, so there is a chance that the OF is set, with Andres Torres as the super-utility OF.

If Beltran wants more money or years, I think Sizemore is worth the risk, depending on his price tag. There are really too many variables to answer all of your questions with any confidence, but I think SabeySabes' level of interest in OF, as of right now, are:

1. Beltran
2. Sizemore
3. DeJesus
4. Crisp
5. Willingham (shot in the dark)
100. Cody Ross

We shall see.

I am not sold that Belt should be the everyday (2012 and beyond) LF and I have never been a big fan of telling someone to learn how to hit at the major league level while learning to play a new position. Maybe Belt can do it well (physically and mentally) and maybe everyone else sees him succeeding at it. And maybe my rose-colored glasses just imagine that he is very good defensively at 1B. I also know that in 2012 Huff has to play 1B which limits the options for using Belt.

------I wonder what the plus/minus is with Belt in LF and Huff at 1B versus Huff in LF and Belt at 1B. I know Huff was bad in the outfield but I also recall seeing a few mis-plays by Huff at 1B that I thought Belt would have been able to handle.

I know NOTHING about this guy except that he is (reportedly) 26. What position does he play and what is the skinny on his game?

The report I saw on mlbtraderumors said he is expecting Aroldis Chapman money. I don't think the Giants are in the market.
