WEEI was talking about the Rooney Rule this morning on my ride into work and they brought up a good point (sort of). Andy Reid was fired on a Monday and Hired on a Friday. Which means he was going to be the coach no matter what... How quickly do you think the Chiefs really "interviewd" someone for the job. I mean I heard they interview a Special Teams coach for the Head job. Now honestly did that particular guy really have a shot at being a HC? NO!

So clearly teams are getting around the rule. I just use the Cheifs as an example because it was just brought up.

So should it be changed? I mean it clearly is getting "worked around"

I am all for equality and totally against racism as I believe it has no place in this world but to me this rule is something that needs to be tweeked so teams can't easily get around it.

Heck the fine is nothing (if I read it correctly) for not "interviewing" a minority candidate for the job. So how does that really do anything to affect if a team follows the rule or not?

"We have already started the process of developing a plan for additional steps that will better ensure more diversity and inclusion on a regular basis in our hiring results. We look forward to discussing these steps with our advisers to ensure that our employment, development and equal opportunity programs are both robust and successful."

I wonder if anyone has ever (or how many) been hired because of the Rooney rule. Like someone who wouldn't have otherwise gotten the interview.

probably not. Teams already have in mind who they want to hire and just "interview" to not get in trouble

The Rooney rule is a joke. The Seahawks knew they were going to hire Pete Carroll as Jim Mora's replacement but had to fly up Leslie Frazier (At the time the defensive coordinator for the Vikings) at the last second to meet the Rooney rule requirement. It was a waste of Frazier's time and a waste of the Seahawks time.

If a team wants to hire a minority head coach they will, the Rooney rule won't change that. When you have millions of dollars at stake I don't think that these franchises will hire on the basis of race.

It's a stupid damn rule always was. To me it stinks of " Hey Token Minority we have no intent to hire you but we have to interview someone " When the rule was put in place it was a step backward not a step forward.

It's all for appearances. But it doesn't hurt anything. Teams spend a few bucks to bring a guy out and talk to him. He spends maybe a day interviewing (and can turn it down if it's not worth his time). Whatever.

How do you "extend" it? Every team has a league determined dice roll and if it comes up the wrong number you have to hire a black guy?

I disagree on this premise...I doubt any minority candidate was ever hired on their 1st interview...going through the process has to have some positive even if they don't get hired by that team. Owners talk...Frazier had to leave a good impression in SEA or he would not have gotten the job in MIN.

Kind of a side topic, but imo...to be an NFL head coach, you need to be more than a coordinator...a college HC with NFL experience at the coordinator level I think would be best prepared to succeed.

why isn't every team forced to tryout a white running back?

If race is supposed to be irrelevant then why is there a rule to highlight race? Equal is equal.

i would like to see a 'welker rule' for more white receivers in the league. we certainly need more diversity at that spot. i'm also a fan of the 'we need more big ass white dudes from europe who can shoot the triple like it's a free throw' rule.

This, but this is more of a politics discussion IMO. The idea of considering race is a broken policy and only exacerbates racial tensions and harms minority groups.

In a perfect world, race would be irrelevant...we know this world is not such...white, black, Hispanic, et al...I really don't care who gets hired or fired, but I do understand how guys get hired...a lot of it is not off your resume but what someone else in a trusted circle thinks about you.

Make no mistake, the RR is broken...Where the RR fails imo is I'm not sure if there is a qualification floor...interviewing candidates that don't have the minimum experience or realistic credentials simply because of skin color serves no purpose.

It shouldn't be changed. It should be eliminated all together. It's a joke and more than anything an insult to the minority coaches in the league. It might have been sort of justified thirty years ago but today all it does is waste the time of teams and the token minority coaches.

The Rooney rule is the stupidest thing in the history of the world. Parade out a token minority candidate you have no intention of hiring for a multi-million dollar job, and somehow that accomplishes something besides wasting people's time / money.

The kind of people who think this is a good thing need to be sterilized. There's no way around it. You either think this is stupid or you're a just a moron, and stupid seems normal to you.

Isn't the Rooney rule itself racist? You are forcing someone to interview someone else based on the color of their skin. When you single out any one race for special treatment, either good or bad, that is racism by its definition.

Further to that point, if the idea behind the Rooney rule is to make sure the hiring process is all-inclusive then why stop at visible minorities? Why don't teams have to interview women, gays, or handicapped people as well?

From an outsider's standpoint looking at the NFL as a whole I don't see the racism they are worried about. I see as many black players and analysts as any other color. Maybe more. I see plenty of coaches and coordinators, trainers, equipment managers, cheerleaders, etc that are all colors. Are there more white coaches? Yes, but so what? That doesn't mean racism was involved. There also happens to be way more white people in America, which would probably lead to more white people being high school or college coaches, which in turn become NFL coaches.

The one area where the discrepancy is obvious is in ownership. I could be wrong but I don't believe there are any minority owners are there?

I dunno, I get tired of people tossing around racist accusations for an endless amount of reasons. I personally don't see it very often. It exists, but not to the degree that we are being told it does.
