Redskins prepare for first on-field look at Brandon Scherff, others at rookie camp - The Washington Post

While it rookie minicamp might be exciting to some, given what happened to Dante Fowler, I cringe at thinking what might happen at ours. I'm sure nothing will happen, but still . . . Anyways, it'll be interesting to see how Scherff, Smith and the others do.

And Connor Halliday has apparently left the building.

Smart money would seriously ease these guys into the physical stuff since its been a few months since they did any football related activity. I dont care if they look like a bunch of pop warner pee wee kids this weekend as long as every one stays healthy. The season doesnt start for another 4 months. Better to work on the mental aspect and work them into season shape, than have one or more be lost for the season before even the preseason begins.

After watching Fowler go down in his first hour as a pro, I'd tend to agree with you. But these guys need some reps since a lot of them will be thrust in the fray immediately. Other than Matt Jones and Austin Reiter, everyone else will potentially be starting or getting some serious time. I'm glad all the rookies are signed and I'm waiting to see the same thing for Kerrigan and Trent. But if we get through this injury-free, I'd be pretty happy.

Thing is, I dont think these guys need to learn how to play the position so much as how WE need them to play it. So I would feel much better if the whole minicamp was about conditioning and book work. I got a feeling Fowler's injury had more to do with him trying to prove he was worth the pick than any thing.

I agree conditioning, weight lifting and learning the play book should be the priority

Some how I picture Callahan saying something like... Damn it boy, get your ASS down and your HEAD up. Look at what you are planning to block.

It might have, but if you watch the video, the play he got injured on looked complete innocuous and routine. At some point, you can't worry about injuries. Bill Parcells once observed that you can't coach scared. He meant that you've got to do what you think you need to do in coaching your players up and not worry about injury. I generally agree with that, but DC is cursed with all sorts of bad luck. For Exhibit A on this, just look at the Caps choking on Wednesday and the Wizards doing the same tonight. Both should've been playing in each of their respective Eastern Conference Finals, but I'm digressing. I think you get the point.

There is a stark, unstated irony to this picture juxtaposing Bruce Allen and Scot McCloughan. Allen, on the one hand, is the son of George, who never saw a draft pick he thought could trade away for an aging vet. George, in fact, traded away a couple of picks twice and got dinged by the league for doing it the second time.

McCloughan, on the other hand, never saw draft picks he couldn't parlay into more picks. Unlike George, he couldn't wait to see how many (later round) picks he could develop into franchise players.

Fortunately for us, McCloughan is now in charge.

Talking about conditioning, get a load of #63 (Tyler Larsen). He looks like some street free agent we picked up from a local UPS warehouse. And not to be too nitpicky, but Scherff may want to monitor his portion control at mealtime and do a few more sit ups.

Speaking of Fowler I've always wondered how the contracts work when things like this happen. Does the team get any relief or do they sign according to the slotting system? Seems only fair that the player get the deal he was due.
