I remember reading that the Bengals were trying to structure an injury settlement with him. Probably didn't make much sense for him to take it when he could simply be paid for sitting out the entire season. Regardless, I don't think we'll ever see him in a Bengals uniform again..... Praise the lord.

He is due:

2012: $1.66 million
2013: $2 million (voidable year)

Is that too much for a backup? He is mediocre at best and I was none too pleased when we drafted him 9th overall in the 2008 Draft. Dude has been here since '08 and can you name one game in which you said "boy...Keith Rivers is a playmaker".

Nope. Bum.

Thomas Howard is the unquestioned starter at WLB going forward.

It was stupid to draft a weak side LB in the top 10...a crappy one at that. Thomas Howard is infinitely better than Rivers. The coaching staff wont even allow Rivers to stay on the field during 3rd downs...that's how ineffective he is.

Not sure he can even be a backup.... Wouldn't that mean he needs to be a key contributor on special teams? Hard for me to believe he would be as good on teams as Skuta or B. Johnson.

Just looked at the 1st round from the 2008 draft - What a horrible situation for the Bengals. We were in great need for defense, but we didn't need corners given that we had just drafted J-Joe and Hall the prior two seasons.

The defensive players taken before Rivers were - Chris Long (disappointment), Glenn Dorsey (average), Vernon Gholston (bust), Sedrick Ellis (solid pro) and Derrick Harvey (bust).

The only other non-cornerback defensive players taken in the 1st round were Jerod Mayo (Rivers was rated higher), Lawrence Jackson (bust), and Kentwan Balmer (bust).

Guess we weren't the only team that got screwed in that draft.

If you remember Marvin LOVED derrick Harvey and they were poised to take him at #9. Apparently everyone knew this so the Jags did us a solid and leapfrogged us. But yeah, Bengals missed but so did alot of other teams. Pretty underwhelming top 10. This year seems like most teams should be very happy with their early picks (with the exception of the Jags who drafted that panty waste Gabbert.

Naturally, the Patriots came out of it with the only good player. I'm not sure about Rivers. Mike Brown shows strange loyalty to guys sometimes. Also I believe one of the two LBs we signed was only for one year.

I thought they wanted Sedrick Ellis and when NO took him, Marv and Co panicked ...blackout for the Harvey Pick, came to with 2 minutes on the clock, and did an accidental inverse excel sort of Kipers top 100, and selected Rivers.

They did want Ellis...but I think they knew that he was most likely not going to be there and were crazy about Harvey. I had a feeling they just checked out the 'Kipers best available' scroll too when they made that pick.

College players are hit or miss. Hard to judge kids who play joke teams most of the time and makes an average player look like a super hero.
