Yeah, I just added my thoughts in the I'm Bored thread, matt (along with jstew), but it deserves its own thread. Very sad news.

I just got home from skiing half an hour ago. You can probably guess why I left early when I got my first ESPN txt that had something to do with skiing.

Oh, dear.

For someone so young, she had done so much for the sport.

Very sad and so very young RIP Sarah.....

I found this interesting.....

SALT LAKE CITY -- Canadian freestyle skier Sarah Burke died Thursday, nine days after crashing at the bottom of the superpipe during a training run in Utah.

Burke, who lived near Whistler in British Columbia, was 29. She was injured Jan. 10 while training at a personal sponsor event at the Park City Mountain resort.

Tests revealed Burke sustained "irreversible damage to her brain due to lack of oxygen and blood after cardiac arrest," according to a statement released by Burke's publicist.

A four-time Winter X Games champion, Burke crashed on the same halfpipe where snowboarder Kevin Pearce suffered a traumatic brain injury during a training accident on Dec. 31, 2009.

As a result of her fall, Burke tore her vertebral artery, which led to severe bleeding on the brain, causing her to go into cardiac arrest on the scene, where CPR was performed, according to the statement by publicist Nicole Wool.

awful. you knew it was bad news when the doctors/family cancelled a presser a couple of days ago.
if it's any solace, she died doing what she loved.

After reading her injuries this is probably not unexpected.

Such a shame. RIP, kid.

These kinds of things always seem to bug me more than most things involving other athletes. I was one freak wind gust or miscalculation away from being this story myself. But truth be told, if I had to do it all over again knowing what I know now, I'd still do it. It's like a drug. A very powerful, free drug. It can't be explained, but I will bet anything I own that if you could have asked her, she would not have changed her past either.

When it goes right, there really is no feeling like it.

When I hear a race car driver talk about getting back in a car after another driver is killed... I get it.

I'm a bit suspicious about the medical bills thing too.

I'd be surprised that someone in her line of work wouldn't have some type of insurance that would cover just such a thing.

She travels all over the world doing an extremely dangerous thing, so I can't imagine she'd be set up in such a way as to only have insurance in her home country.

gotta remember she was still a quasi-amateur athlete ... dont know what her career earnings would have been ... there is hope that sponsors insurance will cover some portion of the expenses (below)

Burke’s agent and publicist have helped the family, which has declined interview requests, set up a fundraising initiative — Raise Money For Medical Expenses To Support Rory Bushfield — to help them with the reported $550,000 in hospital costs.

While the CFSA carries insurance for all its athletes, the policy does not cover athletes competing in events that are not a sanctioned part of the association’s program. In this case, Burke was taking part in an event put on by sponsor, Monster Energy.

Judge said he would be surprised if Monster, which sponsors many action sports events in the U.S., did not have some kind of insurance coverage.

Judge said there may be “some portals and avenues” for the CFSA to assist the family, adding that the organization has received several offers of help from the likes of the Canadian Olympic Committee, the International Olympic Committee and even the Russian ski federation
