i think the toughest part of depression is the person suffering often refuses the help, even when its there.. its such a tough battle

rip rick

True, another problem is some people are good at not showing it, they put on a good act in public but are dying inside.

the thing about it is he accepted the help at least twice that Im aware of and it still wasnt enough

RIP to the Ripper

/and i dont want to rip on anyone here but I was down with what DowngoesBrown tweeted earlier:

Also, a preemptive "screw you" to anyone who thinks it's appropriate to start up the fighting debate tonight, on either side.

Wow, that is terrible. So young, so close to going out on top. Would have been great to play for the Jets.

And fucking wow. His death is the top headline on the side of nhl.com, but the first slide on the home page is still about Crosby. Un-fucking-believable.

True, another problem is some people are good at not showing it, they put on a good act in public but are dying inside.

Another problem is a lot of people who have never had it do not think of depression as a serious problem, thinking instead people should just cheer up or make changes in their lives to become happier. It doesn't quite work that way.

This is a very sad story. You all are right about depression as well. Too many people laugh it off. It has effected my family and it is horrible

I do hope that his family allows his brain to be looked at for CTSE as well though. We need as many as we can get from people in contact sports with deaths like this to learn and be able to respond or prevent more.

got the news last night. I had a profound sadness come over and unfortunately it was almost expected I heard the rumours through some colleagues connected in the Vancouver sports world about his demons and I hope its not self inflicted. RIP Rick. all the best to you and your family.

Oh shit, I didn't even know he had any issues.

I liked his heart, he is in my fourth line in my NHL 11 dynasty.

RIP Rick.

I'm still not against completely banning fighting from the NHL, but two fighters in the same summer tells me something needs to be done. Maybe three fights a year and you're done for the season?

another good article on Ryp... my fav so far

Murphy on Rypien: R.I.P. Ryp - sportsnet.ca WAP

yup it is the best one ... Murph is the local media guy who is the closest to the canucks players in terms of their personal lives ... that last paragraph he mentions that Rypien reached out to Murph and was ready to share his experience/story

this anecdote speaks volumes about the guy .. in multiple ways

As everyone knows, Rypien's years in pro hockey were littered with injuries. But this was not a frail kid. Once he was called up by the Canucks and Alain Vigneault forbid Rypien to fight as he was recovering from a broken hand. On his first shift Rypien crushed an Avs player with a questionable hit on the forcheck and was quickly crowded by Ian Lapperierre. You could see Rypien wanted to follow orders - for about two seconds - and then accepted the offer to what turned out to be a very spirited scrap. Post-game, Laperierre (one of the most honest players to ever play the game) said he appreciated him taking the scrap despite the injury and you could tell he also greatly respected Rypien for it. As for Alain Vigneault, all he could do was shrug his shoulders and say, "that's Ryp."
