What is wrong with Kerrigan's 10 sacks and Murphy's 8? I don't think they could have asked much more of Kerrigan and Gallette and the season isn't over.
I'd like to see a new D coordinator. When was the last time we had a good one?
Lets all remember why we let Rak walk. He was injured for 3 straight years, missing significant time. He was also asking for premier OLB money. It was a real possibility that he was on his way out of the league due to injuries. It had little to do that Rak was not a good player when healthy. It was just a huge risk and the FO decided not to take that risk on. I had no problem with the decision then and still have no issue with it today. It was purely a business decision.
You could be right, I certainly have no idea what the exact cause of his injuries were. But the fact remains that he was a significant risk to resign. You may not agree with the decision, but one could absolutely make the argument to let him walk.I have said it before, and I will say it again. Rak's injury history here was a result of misuse. three torn Pecs, all three suffered trying to make a pass rusher into a coverage linebacker. The Titans gave him what he wanted, we tried to lowball him ( a common theme around these parts).
Still don't think letting Orakpo go was a mistake.
Lewis was the last good D coordinator I could think of and here was here all of one year. That was Spurrier's first year so 2002.
amerson was given up on and has played good football for the raiders , riley 's price was a factor , but we went cheap with JR and we got no production from him
now we will sign him again for the vet min , and hope he doesnt have another Achilles to injure
Nothing... but you have to atleast consider that had we kept Rak, there would be no need for the now yearly Gallette Penguin maneuver.
And for all those saying Barry needs more time and talent.
We had Double G, and a top ten defense four years running. We had Marvin Lewis as DC, and a top ten defense for THOSE four years running. At neither time did we have an over abundance of talent on the defense. We had about what we have now... 2-3 blue chip players, 4-6 middle of the road guys, and some spots we needed to upgrade.
What we did have was two defensive minds that could make almost any 11 guys decent on a defense.
Had the Skins kept Rak, Kerrigan very likely wouldn't be a Redskin now. I thought RK was a better all around player and the only thing Rak had on him was pass rushing. In the last 3 years Rak has 16.5 sacks at present compared to 33 sacks at present for RK. Rak was injured one of those years and has missed significant playing time twice due to injury. RK has never missed a game in his pro career because of injury.
If indeed it was coming down to a choice between keeping Rak or keeping RK. I think the Skins madxe the right choice.
The Skins defense wasn't top ten under Williams in 2006. That year they totalled 6 ints and 19 sacks for the entire season. Getting to the QB and forcing/getting turnovers was always an issue under Williams. Lewis was only here for one season. And both Williams and Lewis had better talent than Barry does espescially on the DL and LB.
you could have kept both
That contingency didn't seem to be a part of any plan the Skins brain trust was thinking of employing as it concerns Rak and RK. The bottom line is this. Rak was rated as the 3rd best player overall in FA and the #1 OLB in FA that year. He was looking to get paid, and rightfully so, but when your reputation is that of a pass rusher. And you come up with a .5 sack in the 7 games you did play in and miss the rest of the season due to a recurring injury. While your backer mate has a career high in sacks that year with 13.5, and is coming up to his own FA very soon. You have a couple tough decisions to make.
@Breed if you havent noticed, we rarely send both OLBs on a pass rush. Rak was misused constantly in our defense.. I blame this on the Coordinator. Its sheer stupidity to drop a pure pass rusher into coverage as much as we did with Rak, and even now as much as we do with Kerrigan. I think a large part of his injury history while with the Skins was due to us trying to make him into something he is not and never would be. Had we kept both, and used them according to their respective skill sets, maybe we could have used some of the multitude of draft picks and roster spots we have thrown at the OLB spot some place else... say D-line or Safety perhaps??

Yeah, I would've liked to have seen Rak playing as a hand in the dirt DE who's first responsibility on passing downs was pass rushing. But we all knew before they drafted Rak that they were gonna switch him to a 34 OLB. Same with RK. IMO Rak, at least in Washington, always seemed too stiff to be very effective in coverage.
I don't see how being a OLB with cover responsibilities could cause or even increase the chance of getting a bicep injury. You have to splain that, Lucy. RK has done the same thing as Rak far as converting and he's yet to miss a game due to any injury. Nor do I recall all the draft picks and roster spots wasted on endless LBs.
I'm sstill waiting for either you or dad to break down how the Skins could've kept both Rak and RK. As they basically play the same position, a premium top dollatr position.
