Wow the first thing I thought was he wasn't a fighter. I do remember that incident in 77 when he slammed his head on the ice. Scarey stuff.

Thanks for the info Pix. I didn't see this.

I think it just shows that it's not limited to fighters...the guys it is being found in most regularly seem to be the fighters/linemen that are constantly receiving "subconcussive" blows to the head. However, knowing that he played years ago before the medical field knew anything substantial about concussions makes me think he just received many and never had the proper treatment. Handling concussed players appropriately is the most important thing for these guys, followed by policing players the right way. Both the NHL and NFL seem to be on the right track in that regard.

Like punches to the head.....that in no way have anything to do with the sport?

I won't take the NHL seriously about "player safety" while they allow, rather encourage repeated punches to the head, which are unnecessary.

Joke....

You know I agree with you on this...but the elimination of that will take a much longer time than the elimination of headshots. Fighting usually has 2 willing participants, unlike headshots.

I just think it is hilarious that a league "concerned with Player safety" let's that shot happen and I won't take them seriously until they address it. Then again, I am in public health, so, you know science and evidence and ACTUALLY seeing and working with people with the long term effects of CTE may cloud my vision....

Fans will never get it, until someone dies on the ice...although that has happened, someone famous,.....maybe.....

Don't even get me started on that. Football ticks me off more though when they come flying off 5 times a game. Athletes: it's not supposed to be comfortable, it's supposed to protect your noggin!

i have this strangely bad feeling that something might happen this year ... just with the tragedies that have happened in the offseason there is a bad aura floating around

I just heard that Shanahan modelled 3 sets of shoulder pads for the press yesterday ... the old ratty ones he wore ... a set that Ovechkin wears that was described as being "off the set of Tron" ... and the new ones that the league will be moving to that almost look smaller than Shanahans old ones did.

key sets of words there is "will be moving to" ... as in ... for the 2012-2013 season

There is a sort of bad feeling floating around...hopefully we're wrong though. Already seen enough careers ended.

Of course, I do not wish for such a thing to occur, but I am close to this, and the research, so it kind of gets me going. I will stop preaching, if asked.

I completely understand. Although I'm not involved in the research, I'm pretty close to athletes in these sports and I see the affects of concussions first hand. Have to take them seriously.
