I really like Rick Barnes. He's a North Carolina born and bred guy from Hickory/Lenoir Rhyne College. Coached in the ACC at Clemson. But the college game has transformed and in some ways passed him by. If he stays, he has tons of talented guys back, especially if Taylor stays in school and Turner comes back. But he cannot expect to keep them all four years like back in the day. He's 60 years old now. If he doesn't take another high profile job he may end up as an analyst.

yeah, I personally liked the guy too. I doubt he's real upset about this; his demeanor the past few years gave me the impression he was kind of worn down/tired of it.

Reports are replacement will be announced, 'within a week'. Must have already been in discussions with someone, whoever that may be.

Oh really? Damn, that doesn't give the interwebs much time to speculate and form ridiculous theories/conspiracies.

indeed. This was reported by two different writers, so sounds like solid info, too. Wonder who it is?

Its Texas. its a football school

Its not UCLA, Duke, Kentucky, or Kansas or some other elite hoops school.

16 tournaments, a final four, 2 elite eights in 17 years

That's pretty comparable to what next tier "basketball schools" like Missouri, Georgetown, Indiana, St Johns, Arkansas etc etc have done in the last 17 years

@goodmanESPN Texas top candidates are Gregg Marshall and Shaka Smart--and both have heavy interest in the opening, sources told Espin

What strikes me as funny is the perception of Texas as a football school, yet they got spurned by a few football coaches when they were hiring, yet it would seem Texas is one of the best basketball jobs out there based on teh interest so far.

Texas is a freaking hot bed of talented athletes. Duke has two starters from Texas. Hell, whoever they hire for this job just has to be a decent recruiter in his own state to be somewhat successful. But I'm sure Steve Patterson wants to take the Longhorns to a level beyond what Barnes could deliver.

Going to be an interesting hire, the state is a hotbed for talent and Texas has about everything you could want as far as facilities ect..

well, part of the problem is the building of a new basketball arena. The old Erwin center, which hosts everthing from Ice Capades, Elton John, to class registration for UT students, will be bulldozed to make way for the new UT Medical center. They need a new basketball facility in a bad way, even if it wasnt going to be bulldozed.

They want 70 million in donations before construction starts, and Patterson got the feeling the donations wouldnt come in if Barnes stayed.

Thus they need a splash hire, if just for donations.

They'll get a good coach and go all the way next year. It will be almost a home championship win for them being the finals are in Houston.

Good for Barnes. I'm happy that he landed in a good position so quickly. He must really like orange!

Doesn't take long with the coaching carousel these days.

But a new basketball venue, that's a different story.
