The FBI moved pretty quick in considering and discounting Jewell. It was the media that absolutely fucked this guy over, all in the name of better ratings. They have still never admitted fault.
They continue to write false stories to this day without fear of being sued.

From what I remember the media moved on him after the FBI fed them the info. Oh my bad, there was a "leak"

I also remember Janet Reno apologizing to him specifically although I don't recall what the exact nature of her apology was. But it seems odd to me to apologize for just doing your job properly.
They may have improperly shared information, that’s true. But the media is really who screwed him over.

While it is said by most pundits and reviewers that "Richard Jewell is a fine movie I didn't think the story would sell this long after it happened.

It is a story that literally zero international appeal, and outside of the Atlanta area (where it did much better than the national numbers) I didn't see it generating a lot of interest among young movie goers who were either children when the 96 Olympics were staged or not even alive yet.

Oh well, it'll be out on RedBox that much sooner

"True crime" is popular right now. Probably what they were banking on

Meh. I'm not sure in the end if it was a good idea for a movie. Few historical figures that appear in the movie are 'good guys', the media certainly isn't fond of being reminded that it is grossly unethical at times, and as @Rex Racer said, it's not a movie with widespread appeal. The movie was made too long after the events in question, and biographical / documentary films rarely make back huge budgets.

The only people who really deserved this movie are Richard Jewell and his family, and Jewell himself is dead.

Clint tried to use it as an allegory to show how an unstoppable media out of control can ruin a person’s life, but his target audience isn’t long on connecting dots...

Yeah, Eastwood was trying to insert himself into the current political shenanigans. His opinions on such things have generally been vacuous over the years. I'm a fan, but glad this one flopped.

Anyone actually see the movie and have an opinion on the movie itself?
