just going really back and forth on this ... one day i think its a good thing, one day a bad thing ... theres a shit load of stories about it at theprovince.com

i guess we kinda set the precedent of retiring captains who were not league HOF calibre because of considerations revolving around work ethic and/or being involved in the community so in that respect Naslund fits in with Smyl and Linden in some respects.

Of course it really epitomizes the years of franchise mediocrity that these 3 players are the only ones "worthy" of a jersey retirement. Maybe its just too soon ... we arent far enough removed from his retirement to let go of all the feelings of missed opportunitiees and underachievement that the team era he captained is associated with. Especially considering his final couple of years here, to my mind, he really went through the motions and looked like he hated hockey. I just feel kinda meh about the whole deal and i cant help but think if Gillis wasnt GM (and his former agent), the #19 would still be in circulation

the team1040 has been getting calls and emails that some people going to the game plan on booing during the ceremony which is just appalling to me.

/classy touch that BMo is flying in for the ceremony

Im with you Jstew (that rhymes btw)

Im up and down. I actually believe yes that both Smyl and Linden go up for their Playoff Success. 82 and 94 cannot be under stated with them as Captain. I still dont think Naslund should be up there overall. just NOTHING in the playoffs. Very good regular season success yes but then Why isnt Pavel Going up? his regular seasons here were the best of anyone in terms os excitement and talent. Who knows maybe it will but then we are really watering down the history just to have them up.

noone will Boo Markus and anyone who starts will be shutdown pretty quick by the other 18859 (it holds 18860) people that will cheer.

The team era he had was pretty stacked and full of offense. before that what really did he accomplish other than really be nothing more than a regular player. once the WCE was gone he was back to being a regular player with no playoff success (more a history of choking)

Trevor Linden was Mr Game 7 for this team his whole career, he was so good in those big games. Naslund just didnt show it, and your right his last couple years looked like a burden a $6M a year burden. he just didnt want NHL hockey in his last 3 years (1 with the Rangers in which he walked away from a $4M last season)

I love that BMo is coming in he plays tonight in Calgary so at least the schedule allowed it.

Im not going to say a word about it once its Up.

the next question for me down the road is do you Put Henrik up alone or Both? Art Ross and HART Trophy is pretty big for any franchise. I guess so is a Lester......if only he would have gotten 50 in that last game against the Kings I think that to me would have swayed me a little more.

Im so conflicted.

You said it earlier that it's not just the on ice success, but how the captain has carried himself in the city during his time here. Naslund has been in town for the last week already, and has spent a big chunk of time at BC Children's Hospital, and Canucks Place. No, that alone doesn't warrant it, but the fact he never reached the 50 goal mark doesn't mean he shouldn't be either. Neither Smyl nor Linden hit those marks either. Markus was part of the most exciting dynamic line we've had in this city. Yes, the team did not enjoy playoff success with him as the captain, but I would put as much of the blame on Crawford and Cloutier.
Oh, and Bure will never has his number retired. Most exciting player ever for the canucks? For sure. Left because he sat out until they traded him? Yes. Deserves to have his number worn by anyone that wants it? Absolutely.

1 - the fact he never reached the 50 goal mark doesn't mean he shouldn't be either.

2 - Yes, the team did not enjoy playoff success with him as the captain, but I would put as much of the blame on Crawford and Cloutier.

3 - Oh, and Bure will never has his number retired. Most exciting player ever for the canucks? For sure. Left because he sat out until they traded him? Yes. Deserves to have his number worn by anyone that wants it? Absolutely.

1 - I didnt mean to imply that that should be the reason, but I think it showed that he didnt have it when it counted most. he was a wonderful player with wonderful talent but I believe that his personality did not allow for him to be the type of player that he should of been when it counted most. the only time I ever really did see it was game 7 against Calgary on his end to end rush to set up Matt Cooke. REally though I just never saw it in him to be that character player when needed most. that game against the Kings STINGS for me it was so important to win for so many reasons and they choked and he was captain. to me he did not rally anyone anytime. but I really dont want to get into bringing him down as a player he is retired and about to receive a great honour and I am happy he was part of the canucks franchise I really am. I just think its 50/50 that he should be up there. I dont like 50/50

2 - I would still want me captain to rally as mentioned above if he did it in the dressing room I never saw it translate to the ice. and he never did it on the ice. at least to me he didnt. cloutier yeah cloutier... poor guy. super nice, just not a head for pressure moments. crawford had crazy decisions but he was a great coach. my biggest complaint was not having clouts in for game 7 against Minnesota it was not having Auld in for Game 6 against Minnesota that was the time for a change

3 - totally agree. which is why we shouldnt see him. but he is Gillis's buddy so dont be surprised if he goes up. if he is not in teh ring of honour this year he will be raised in the next 2 years.

I am very meh on Naslund's jersey being retired. If it were up to me it wouldn't be going up.

I am very much not in favour of Bure's going up.

I was at the game, and the only issue I had with the whole night was listening to people booo Brian Burke.

I may not like him now that he's running the crapiest franchise in the league, but he wasn't there on Saturday in that capacity. He took time out to fly across the country to come to a ceremony to support a guy who obviously wanted him there. Was a bit upset to hear the lack of class in the crowd, but for the most part, the ceremony was very similar to Linden's. I actually laughed a bunch at Gillis, and Bertuzzi's 'cheer beer' was great stuff.

hell they booed Bettman at Trevors retirement even Bettman laughed at that.

I dont like it so I agree but if Burke didnt have to be such a cranky goof in some things maybe he wouldnt get twats doing that. kudos to canucks for inviting burke.

Agreed. I can't imagine it was easy for him to sit there next to the three Canucks owners, but he showed up. I still hate his guts, but not in that setting.
