Well you can have two girlfriends (or boyfriends) right? But you only marry one.... At least in a monogamous world... But its damn expensive and stressful to manage two women so why do it? haha

I see what you're saying in projecting Kaep/Tolz vs drafting Luck. I just have a hard time wrapping my finger around projecting their potential w/o seeing them in action: ie Tom Brady.

I think this debate could go on... and on... and on... and although I'd like a higher post count - when do we stop? lol

If neither of them take a snap this year, I take Luck.
If one or both of them are decent this year I still take Luck.
If one or both of them look better than decent I think I still take Luck.

The Niners haven;t had a decent QB in a long time and they'll need one if they ever expect to be decent again. I'd rather have too much talent at QB than not enough. I am hopeful about CK but I am not sure he will ever be a successful WCO QB.

If the Prom queen is hotter and has more money then sure dump your girl like a bad habit and upgrade. Same as your car, it gets old and less shiney trade it in for a newer model.

The car analogy is great because it emphasizes my point. You just spent money on a 2011 Porsche. You haven't even put 5,000 miles on it. Are you going to buy a 2012 Aston Martin?

It would be sweet to have two sports cars. But I'd rather spend my money elsewhere until the Porsche proves it's a lemon.

ahhh, now this illustration fits your point better, well done.

haaa, trust me i know about long threads where no one wants to quit. but notice these long 'arguments' tend to go on tangents, after a while both sides not really on the same subject.

yep, i'm with this view. we won't really be sure on Kaep or Tolzien by next draft, so IF a 'franchise' QB falls to us, he'll be our BPA. doesn't have to be Luck either, if Baalke/Harbaugh and Staff feels its someone else, fine with me.

i get the argument we could use that 1st rounder to fill another spot, but ensuring we fill QB takes precedence. we of all fans should know without a quality QB, its near impossible to get far.

not quite, you did spend good money on a 2011 car, but you don't know for sure its a Porsche? you won't quite know it in 2012 either?

More than likely we won't know before the draft what kind of car we drafted in Kaep. But we also don't know what kind of car Luck is. We assume he's this next hot shot Peyton Manning or what have you.

We have a QB Coach that has an eye for talent. If he really determines it best to draft Luck and give up his Transformer project then that's his call. But I'd take that as his first failure and remove his QB Coach label, because I was raised under the premise that a poor mechanic blames his tools for piss poor work.

Regardless. Let's win the West and not have this debate in 6 months!

yes, the odds of that scenario (drafting a franchise QB) are low, so sorry on prolonging the topic.

obviously, i'm with you on winning the West, if we do chances are Kaep got a little more than 'mop up duty'? whether its enough to remove this debate remains to be seen, but better than riding pine all year.

I think we have the same holes that we have had for the last 3 years and 3 coaches. We have all seen them. We can't seem to even develop a home field advantage. With a new coach, scheme and several different players some holes should be filled and hopefully not but a few new holes could develop. We will see soon. Go 49ers!!

How can you expect home field advantage when the fans start booing incomplete passes with 6 minutes off the clock in the 1st Quarter? Candlestick is nearly as hostile for the 49ers with Alex Smith at QB as it is for their opponents.

I don't think the possibility of drafting Luck would ever happen but there is to freaking way that I would pass up on Luck, even if Kaep AND Tolzien show to be capable QBs. This is a QB driven league and having too many potentially good to great QBs could easily be the steal of the decade if you factor in what teams like ARZ gave up for very mildly proven NFL QBs. There are so many teams STARVED for QB help, that the bounty for a good one is very high. Miami, Oakland, Washington, and Buffalo all off the top of my head have NOBODY on their roster with enough of the "it" factor to be considered serious starters as opposed to stopgaps.

There is no reason to believe Seattle will be successful running the ball against us so I expect our two main weaknesses (pass protection & pass defense) will be attacked early and often on the 11th.

In last years' opener, Seattle's front-seven beat the crap out of us all day long while our secondary was trying to help Matt Hasselbeck get into the HOF. I can see no reason why Carroll would not draw up the same game plan and force us to show we can beat it.

The Seattle game certainly won't tell us everything, but it will tell us a lot of things.

I would add pass rush to that list as well.

Exactly! The first incomplete pass Smith throws you start to hear the rumblings. That puts added pressure on Smith that he doesn't need.

If Aldon doesn't prove himself this year as an "elite" pass rusher, would you want us to try and address it in the first round? I'm willing to give him at least a couple of years and possibly take one in later rounds.

As far as Kap goes, I wouldn't let him stand in the way of Luck, Barkley, or Jones. He's still a very raw player.

even if aldon pans out, we need a 2nd olb. there are a ton of holes thanks to poor drafting over the past few years.
