the defense will be key in this game . if they can put up a fight we can win but if they continue their shoddy play then we will lose badly again
we need all 3 phases to win , if not its 3-7
Having never played football myself, I'm at a disadvantage to many of you with regards to scheming and what each player is responsible for, particularly in 34 vs 43 defenses. I just know when I see open lanes and broken coverage.
I heard Doc ask Kerrigan about how much contain he is responsible for in a game and the answer was 85%. Can someone explain how that translates out? Does that mean we are expecting him to basically play to a weakness vs strength? Thanks.
when they talk about containment they are asking about who is going to set the edge and funnel the ball carrier to the inside so ILBS can make the tackles
sometimes a de is the contain guy and sometimes the CB is depending on the call
against a vick and mccoy this is huge
hope that helps
Thanks dad, yes it does. So, if I understand this right, it's harder to get sacks/pressure if you are more responsible for containment? Also would follow, more difficult with a mobile QB or great RB?
Well, this just reinforces the replacement of London as critical next year. Hopefully, he will retire and maybe continue on with team as a LB coach/asst.
Without understanding the context in Kerrigan's response, Dad is right. And yes, it does affect his ability to pressure the QB. His first responsibility is to ensure no one with the ball gets outside of him. So he can't just pin his ears back and go after the QB, he has to wait a second and read the play as it develops. This means that 85% of the time, he will have to take a wide/outside rush. If the OT knows this, he becomes much easier to pass block as you can just ride his momentum to the outside and push him out of the play, leaving a gap for the QB to step up into unless another defender stunts into that gap.
