the defense will be key in this game . if they can put up a fight we can win but if they continue their shoddy play then we will lose badly again

we need all 3 phases to win , if not its 3-7

I like our chances if we start fast and play a relatively complete game. Offense, Morris and Griff have to play well, D has to play average and STs has to not epically f.... Up and give up terrible field position, make and safeguard punts and field goals and not give up returns for TDs. We pretty much need a score, every time we have the ball and covert on third downs. Gotta get some TOs, win TOP, and get some pressure on Foles, blah, blah, blah.

Same thing as every week...

Basically, I need to see it on the field to believe this team can make any noise in this division this year.

Pretty Captain Obvious statement, but thats where I'm at.

We must have pressure on Foles. We must blanket McCoy at all times. If we do these two things, I believe we will win this game. If not, Foles may throw for 7 more TD's.

And why does the screen game from opponents like Denver & Philly kill us? We never seem to defend the screen very well. Then again, we never use the screen game to our advantage either.

Having never played football myself, I'm at a disadvantage to many of you with regards to scheming and what each player is responsible for, particularly in 34 vs 43 defenses. I just know when I see open lanes and broken coverage.

I heard Doc ask Kerrigan about how much contain he is responsible for in a game and the answer was 85%. Can someone explain how that translates out? Does that mean we are expecting him to basically play to a weakness vs strength? Thanks.

when they talk about containment they are asking about who is going to set the edge and funnel the ball carrier to the inside so ILBS can make the tackles

sometimes a de is the contain guy and sometimes the CB is depending on the call

against a vick and mccoy this is huge

hope that helps

Thanks dad, yes it does. So, if I understand this right, it's harder to get sacks/pressure if you are more responsible for containment? Also would follow, more difficult with a mobile QB or great RB?

Well, this just reinforces the replacement of London as critical next year. Hopefully, he will retire and maybe continue on with team as a LB coach/asst.

Without understanding the context in Kerrigan's response, Dad is right. And yes, it does affect his ability to pressure the QB. His first responsibility is to ensure no one with the ball gets outside of him. So he can't just pin his ears back and go after the QB, he has to wait a second and read the play as it develops. This means that 85% of the time, he will have to take a wide/outside rush. If the OT knows this, he becomes much easier to pass block as you can just ride his momentum to the outside and push him out of the play, leaving a gap for the QB to step up into unless another defender stunts into that gap.

Offense is still top 10 in YPG and more importantly PPG (in fact only 1.5 points behind last year).

It is completely on our defense - our offense is good/very good, not great. And because of this it can't always make up for the misgivings of our Defense (and now, ST, although that has been better as of late).

Last year when we went 7-0 our offense was clicking, sure, but it wasn't much different than it had been when we were 3-6. The key was that our defense forced 15 TOs during this time as well as held teams to 20 PPG (they are currently holding teams to over 30 PPG).

Silver lining this year - we don't have to go 7-0 to win the division. This game, to me, comes down 100% to how our defense plays against McCoy and Jackson. The Lions and Vikings loss loom so, so, large right now. Oh well, hoping for 4-6.

yes td does so kerrigan cant "tee off " . now the flip side is it should make the olb / de more disciplined which helps in the run game and in misdirection plays

understand that RAK gets that too
