Boston Red Sox Top Prospects - MLB Top Prospects

Boston Red Sox Top Prospects
Posted on January 2, 2015 by mlbtopprospects0 Comments
Below are the 2015 Boston Red Sox Top Prospects.

Opening Day payrolls
(Major League contracts plus signing bonuses):
2014: $156,350,125
2013: $154,555,500
2012: $175,249,119

A Look Back… Last 5 Years Draft Picks
Year Name/Position School/Hometown Pick
2014 Michael Chavis/3B Sprayberry HS, Marietta, Ga. 26
2013 Trey Ball/LHP New Castle (Ind.) High School 7
2012 Brian Johnson/LHP Florida 31
2012 Deven Marrero/SS Arizona State 24
2011 Blake Swihart/C Cleveland High School 26

2015 Red Sox Top Prospects
Rank/Overall Name Position
1/20 Henry Owens LHP
Henry Owens Rookie Card: 2013 Bowman
1

Top Position Prospect : LHP

Owens is a crafty lefty who throws his fastball in the low 90s normally sitting in the 88-92 range and has a plus changeup. Consistency on his other breaking pitches is something that he continues to work on. He is #1 on our list because of his overall stuff and feel for pitching. He projects as a mid-to-back-end rotation starter.
2/24 Blake Swihart C
Blake Swihart Rookie Card: 2011 Bowman
1

Top Position Prospect : C

Swihart is a rare commodity of a great defender and a great hitting catcher. There are very few, if any that fall into the same category as Swihart. To support his case, he nailed 47% of runners attempting to steal last season. At the plate, he shows great pitch recognition and has pop from both sides of the dish. His aggressiveness at the plate can get him into trouble especially against polished pitchers but ultimately he will hit for a high average with a little power.
3/55 Garin Cecchini 3B
Garin Cecchini Rookie Card: 2011 Bowman
1

Top Position Prospect : 3B
Cecchini made his MLB debut last year after a solid season in Triple-A. He has hit well over his pro career and drew rave reviews for his ability to get on-base. His bat will carry him to the bigs this year and his work ethic is very impressive.

4 Rusney Castillo OF
Rusney Castillo Rookie Card: 2015 Bowman
1

The Red Sox were very aggressive in pursuit of Castillo offering the largest guaranteed money spent for a player from Cuba. Rusney is signed through the 2020 season for a total agreement of $72.5 million. So what does he bring to the table? How about dinner, plates, silverware and all the fixins. In other words, he is one tremendously talented individual. He makes solid contact and generates of ton of pop. He will swing and miss a ton but what Cuban MLB player do you know doesn’t? Defensively he is a very solid outfield and projects to pencil in at center. A 20/20 season is not too optimistic for this year.

5 Eduardo Rodriguez LHP
Eduardo Rodriguez Rookie Card: 2014 Bowman
1

Rodriguez came over to the Red Sox from the O’s for Andrew Miller. Prior to 2014 Rodriguez was a left-hander with great control hitting 94-96 from the left side with great movement. His slider and changeup compliment his impressive fastball. He profiles as a #2 starter if not a #1, being compared to Johan Santana for much of his pro career has put lofty expectations on his shoulders. A good start to the season could put him in the bigs as soon as May.
6 Brian Johnson LHP
Brian Johnson Rookie Card: 2012 Bowman
1

Johnson was a tremendous athlete in college, having a hit 15 home runs during his three-year run at Florida. The Red Sox selected his with the 31st overall pick in the 2012 draft. He possesses four average to better offerings and works extremely fast. He does not have a knock-out pitch but does offer a above-average control and confidence is solid.
7 Rafael Devers 3B
Rafael Devers Rookie Card: 2014 Bowman
1

Quite possibly one of the most intriguing prospects in the Red Sox system. Devers has a lightning quick bat with power to drive the ball to all fields. At just 18, he is expected to begin the 2015 campaign in Low-A, a bit of an aggressive spot for him but the Red Sox front office truly believe in his abilities. His defense at the hot corner needs seasoning especially with his footwork. His bat is the most impressive attribute by far.

8 Manuel Margot OF
Manuel Margot Rookie Card: 2014 Bowman
1

Margot was an unbelievable athlete coming out of the DR in 2011. With very fast hands and even faster legs, Margot ended the season as one of just five minor leaguers with 10HR’s and 40 stolen bases. He is an absolute spark plug and makes things happen on the base paths and at the plate. Expect him to open the 2015 campaign in High-A Salem.
9 Matt Barnes RHP
Matt Barnes Rookie Card: 2011 Bowman
1

Barnes thrilled Red Sox fans with him very impressive debut in 2012, since then his improvements have stalled. Don’t get us wrong he certainly profiles as a mid-rotation starter. He ended up working through a shoulder tenderness in the early going of the season and would eventually make his MLB debut during the year. Barnes has a durable build that can withstand the rigors of a full MLB season. His fastball was clocked at 98 last year and he throws it for strikes. He offers a change up and curve that are both solid and his command is impressive. He piles up the strikeouts but is also prone to giving up hits.
10 Deven Marrero SS
Deven Marrero Rookie Card: 2012 Bowman
1

Marrero was selected #25 in the 2012 draft by the Sox, at one point many scouts saw him as the #1 overall pick. His junior year at Arizona State was not that great which prompted him to fall. The Red Sox are happy with this selection as they have a defensive whiz at short who makes plays and shows great range. His hands are what scouts truly love about him. Offensively he has yet to catch up to his glove. He spent half of the 2014 season in Double-A and their other half in Triple-A. He hit well during his time in Portland, .291 clip with 12 stolen bases. What lies ahead for Marrero? He needs to make strides at the plate before the Red Sox give him the nod to be the starting shortstop in Boston.

Cecchini is not a top 10 prospect on this team right now IMO. He fell off a cliff in AAA. He was much younger than his competition, but it's alarming to see his BB:K go from 94:86 in A+/AA ball to 44:99 in AAA. Not to mention he hasn't really shown much in the way of power.

Not much over the weekend. MD and nyr are all excited about the Rangers. Ox has apparently jumped on the Rangers bandwagon. Yam is taking the new job. Zig is getting a new car. They miss you terribly. Write soon!

Next to Swihart, Moncada is the best prospect in the system now. And that's only because nobody has seen Moncada play yet.

You all need to move some pieces for pitching...Disasterson cannot be your #3 and have a viable chance at making the playoffs

And I think they will do just that. However, the AL East looks wide-open this season. Plenty of time to see what you need and make the moves in July. The Sox have some serious questions in that rotation, but they also have some decent depth in the minors, too.
