Was talking with a buddy this morning at the gym and saw all the signing highlights from these top recruits and we got to talking. Does anyone actually ever follow up on these kids to see how they turned out? I mean, take the top 150 overall recruits and then see how they pan out say by where they are drafted or if they are even drafted at all. Heck you could take the 5 top recruits from each position and then see how they stack against the rest of their position when it comes to draft day a few years later. I think it would be interesting to see how many kids that were top recruits actually pan out turn into the stars they are "suppose" to be. It would be cool to see how these kids turn out after being hyped in highschool as the next greatest player. I know there are also a lot of variables that go inot how they finish their college careers (coaching, injuries, etc), but it would still be intersting to see the results.

Maybe this isn't done because the recruiting sites would lose credibility if it were found that their "top stars" didn't fare as well as some of their "lower stars" did.

there are percentages somewhere, but % of making to the NFL is higher w/ 5 stars and 4 stars and so on.

you can go to scout and look at the top rated overall listing and set the year menu back about 3 years and you will recognize a lot of those names. Of course not all of them but quite a few.

even when you go back to our own classes brought in you can go back a few years and see that a lot of out top guys signed are big time guys now. However without the coaching plus the evaluating thats done with the non big star guys we wouldn't have much of anything but just a few big names

Not that this matters----here's 2008:

Baker Steinkuhler #2 G 5 Star
---1 year starter at DT. Solid contributor. Good not great so far in his career

Collins Okafor #48 RB 3 Star
---was going to transfer, then didn't....big mistake. He'll never take a meaningful snap

David Whitmore #45 CB 3 Star
---Don't believe he's with the program anymore

Sean Fisher #17 LB 3 Star

---Starting OLB, injuries have slowed him down. He'll probably finish out as a solid contributor, nothing over the top though.

John Levorson #119 Saftey 2 Star

---no longer a friend of the program

Tyson Hetzer JC TE 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Ricky Henry JC G 3 Star
---2nd time he was recruited to NU....He's a beast as a run blocker, awful pass blocker. He'll play in the NFL

Cameron Meredith #49 DE 3 Star
---Starter on D. I thought he had a very solid season...should a good motor & I think he'll be a force next year...just me though

Kyler Reed #19 WLB 3 Star
---1st season of solid PT was this past season. Provided the offense with it's only real playmaking target as a receiver. He's got star written all over him.

Brandon Thompson #49 T 3 Star
---hasn't played yet (significant anyway)

Micah Kreikemeier NR SLB 2 Star
---hasn't played

Ben Cotton #21 TE 3 Star
---starter, does a decent job. Nothing over the top fantastic though

Quintin Toailoa #43 DT 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Kody Spano #48 QB 3 Star
---has more ligament tears than completions

David Grant #84 T 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Josh Williams #20 DE 4 Star
---Looks to have the inside track at starting DE next year. He has been kind of a disappointment with his high school hype.....he's still got 2 more years to turn into something. Seems a bit soft to me (maybe just small)

Alonzo Whaley #51 WLB 2 Star
---received quality reps this year out of necessity with all the injuries. Thought he did well though and should get more reps next year. For a 2 star, they are getting what was expected or more.

Will Compton #13 MLB 4 Star
---Starter @ MLB. When he's healthy he's pretty damn good. He and David should be a force next year.

Courtney Osborne #210 WR 2 Star
---starting Safety now for NU. I'd say he was a diamond in the rough. Looked very solid back there.

Steven Osborne #236 WR 2 Star
---Has not played

Antonio Bell #111 WR 3 Star
---DNQ came in last year & is now a DB. Has not played

Alphonso Dennard #80 CB 3 Star
---One of the best CBs in the country....GEM

Lester Ward #170 RB 2 Star
---Will never take a meaningful snap

Khiry Cooper #102 WR 3 Star
---Shoulda taken the money in the draft. He's got a few more years to do something but so far, not so good

PJ Smith #55 S 3 Star
---Starter for 1st half of season @ safety. Has ability. Needs to tackle better & take better routes to the ball. For a 3 star, I'd say he's about on par with that ranking

Tim Marlowe NR WR 2 Star
---returner. Nothing special....

Justin Rodgers #98 RB 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Mason Wald NR S 2 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

I'd say that recruiting class has been pretty shitty looking back on it. They had a few guys pan out. Nothing to write home about anyway

I think Marlowe could become a solid #2 receiver.

Here's the 2007 class for comparative purposes only....

Niles Paul #20 WR 4 Star
---Great measurables. Will play in the NFL. I would say he under performed his expectations. Part his fault, part QB's fault IMO

Demetrious Davis #32 DT 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Jared Crick #56 DE 3 Star
---Had very good season IMO. No Suh, but no one else will be. He'll be a 1st round draft pick next season barring something crazy. He's exceeded his ranking.

Shawn Sullivan #53 CB 3 Star
---No longer a friend of the program

Anthony Blue #74 CB 3 Star
---He's been a contributor. Nothing huge but he'll have a chance again next year (Sr. year). Maybe he'll step-up.

Patrick Witt #68 QB 2 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Ryan Hill #36 TE 3 Star
---believe he had to call it quits due to injury.

Quentin Castille #8 FB 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Roy Helu #86 RB 3 Star
---Exceeded expectations. He will be a mid-round pick. Has suprising burst and quickness. I've always been a Helu fan. I wish he got more touches when he was here.

Blake Lawrence #17 WLB 3 Star
---Due to concussions, he's gone as well.

Adi Kunalic NR K 2 Star
---Difference maker on ST. He was a touchback waiting to happen. He will be missed next year. Now we're going to find out if we can cover kicks!

LaTravis Washington #63 S 3 Star
---I was very excited about him coming in when he signed. He successfully did nothing. Partly because he didn't have it & partly because they kept moving him around.

Zac Lee JC 4 Star
---I will always wonder what he woulda done with this team had he been given the reigns for this year. He wasn't good last year, but he wasn't horrible either. As far as his production is concerned, I'd say his *'s make him overrated.

Eric Hagg NR WR 3 Star
---Steal. This kid was a game changer on D. It's kind of amusing to look back & see all the position changes. Some work & some don't. Clearly, this one did....he's an NFL guy as a DB. He'll probably play safety @ the next level due to versatility. May be a good nickle back.

Marcus Mendoza #36 RB 4 Star
---Overrated? He hasn't taken a meaningful snap. He's a cornerback now. He's played 3 different positions in 4 years. Can't say coaches have screwed him...but he hasn't been good enough to stay anywhere. Coaches have tried to get him on the field i'd imagine.

Armando Murillo JC 4 Star
---Started & played fairly well. I don't remember if the guy got drafted or not. He wasn't a superstar but did start.

Austin Stafford #10 WLB 4 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Joseph Townsend JC 4 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Terrance Moore #52 DT 3 Star
---Playing this season as primary back up. He'll have the same role next year. He'll be a 2 year contributor to the program. I'd say his 3* suited him well.

William Yancy #60 DE 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Larry Asante JC 4 Star
---I loved him. He sometimes got himself out of position but he had a nose for the football. I thought he lived up to the billing.

Shukree Barfield JC 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Marcel Jones #44 T 3 Star
---2 year Starter on the Oline. He'll help anchor (maybe) an oline that needs improvement across the board. Exceeded expectations, comparatively speaking

Prince Amukamara #47 RB 3 Star
---Steal of the recruiting season. All-American DB, top 5-10 draft pick. Talk about a hidden gem! Great get by the staff.

Kevin Dixon JC DT 3 Star
---no longer a friend of the program

Curenski Gilleylen NR WR 3 Star
---Thought he'd be our deep threat at the beginning of the 09-10 season. Instead he decided he didn't want to catch footballs as much as he wanted to run past them.....

Javario Burkes #9 T 4 Star
---Started early in his career. Had heart problems and couldnt stay active. Gone.

here's the breakdown:
27 signee's
12 of those 27 didn't finish their careers @ NU
A few Gems, a few Busts
Some quality NFL talent came out of this class.

If you view the star rankings is as a probability, rather than a set in stone prediction, it becomes more dependable, here are some visuals. From rivals albeit
