I was having a conversation with one of my friends about possible trades for Brad Richards and the Oil came to mind. If the Oil give up 1st and 2nd round picks, since Dallas is also rebuilding, and use the remaining picks for defenseman, would this be a strong or weak trade?

That is of course assuming that he would have the intent to sign with the team come this summer

I thought I heard Richards say his first choice wouuld be to remain in Dallas and then maybe look at a possible return to Tampa Bay. I don't see Richards signing a long term contract in Edmonton.

Null, if the Oilers were on the edge of the playoffs this year that might be a good trade for them. But I don't see Richards vaulting the Oil from the lottery all the way into the playoffs next year, even if guys like Hall, Eberle, and the rest of the young guns keep improving. That would be a good trade for Dallas, although they probably wouldn't get anyone as good as Richards with that top five pick, they still get something of value for him. If I were Joe, I would probably want something besides a first rounder and picks for Richards, like a young player and a good prospect.

The scary thing for the Oilers in that trade is Richards's concussion. Concussions have drastically changed the style of play and the effectiveness of top tier players like Lecavelier, Savard, and even mid level guys like Brad Stuart. Even if Richards agrees to an extension, who knows what he's going to be like when he comes back? It's a very risky deal for Edmonton, and even if Richards returns to 100% they are out a lotto pick and still not a Cup contender.

I think he said even that Rangers were a destination if those first two choices didn't work out... then I believe they asked him about Toronto and he silently shook his head, lol.

I feel like that makes zero sense. Dallas is still a good young team when healthy and with Richards, so I wouldn't list them as "rebuilding" and the Oil are too close to the lottery for them to give up their first rounder, because it'll still be extremely high. That and Richards would HAVE to sign an extension, and that's very slim in Edmonton.

I totally agree about the concussion he suffered. It has taken till this season for Bergeron to get back to his normal competitive level and that was like what, 2006? Lecavalier same thing, just now starting to rebound. I was more just spitballing ideas to see what everyone thought. Good response.

But, but, I thought everyone wanted to play in Toronto...and for less money. Brad Richards, you non-conformist you.

Just imagine the huge contracts Komisarek or Beauchimen would have gotten had they signed elsewhere for their full value!

why would the Oilers possibly do that?

Does Renney still believe that are making the playoffs?

The day can't be too far off when we see the following in the standings:

x - Edmonton

I'm setting March 13th as the benchmark.

Yup he told TO media when the stars were visiting that he didn't want to be part of a rebuild
And yes he kinda laughed off the possibility of playing for the laffs
At which point the TO media went apeshit with bewilderment (ie how could someone not want to play for the leafs)

Which was then followed by richards agent pat morris coming out and saying he was misquoted and he would be willing to play for anyone

(Which is code for ... "We want the biggest bloated whale of a franchise to stay in the bargaining equation for free agency so
their overpriced offer can be used to leverage morre money from a team brad actually wants to play for next year"
