I must say that I'm suprised Jake Dotchin was not protected. The players unprotected are Dotchin, Garrison, Sustr, Witkowksi, Koekkoek, Paquette, Brown & Budaj. I imagine that in all likelihood that Vegas will take either Dotchin or Koekkoek, unless Yzerman can work out a deal with Vegas were they take someone like Paquette and Brown and the Lightning give up a low pick or prospect in the deal to ensure Dotchin or Koekkeok are not claimed.

Yes Danny, this is a big surprise to me as well! Vegas would be stupid not to take him from the Lightning. Also looking around the league, I see Detroit did not protect Mrazek and Pittsburgh did not protect Fleury of course. That would be quite a net-minder pairing, do you think?

From what I've seen on internet the fact Dotchin wasn't protected, the Lightning are going to look to make a deal with Vegas so Dotchin isn't the claimed player. In regards to other players being exposed what about Marchessault being left unprotected by the Panthers. There are some good players that Vegas are going to choose from on Wednesday night

Yes Danny, I remember the Lightning's expansion draft. There wasn't this kind of talent exposed back than. Luongo is also unprotected in Panther organization. They may be playoff bound from the start.

A few mock drafts have been released with Vegas taking Koekkoek. I do think our deal comes down to Dotchin or Koekkoek unless a side deal in the works. I wouldn't at all be surprised if Yzerman is trying to get Vegas to take Garrison and might offer a 2nd round pick as well to get the deal done. Would Vegas take that? I'm not sure but getting a 3rd pairing defenseman and additionally 2nd round pick for nothing might be something they would consider. Let's just say that was the case Yzerman would move down in the 1st round of the draft and re-gain that 2nd round pick

According to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times, the Lightning appear to have a side deal in place to protect their young defenseman.

Update: Bob McKenzie was on TSN 1050 in Toronto confirming that he’s heard for a while that Steve Yzerman has had a deal in place. With Jake Dotchin and Slater Koekkoek both left unprotected, it seemed as though there must be something coming from the Lightning to steer the Vegas pick.
