Players exposed to Vegas

Alex Killorn
Braydon Cobun
Jason Garrison
Andrej Sustr
Cedric Paquette
J.T Brown
Peter Budaj
Slater Koekkoek

The Lightning purposly leave Killorn exposed to Vegas due to his contract and I think Vegas will claim him. Now Killorn is a good player and I do think the Lightning will attempt to move him prior to expansion draft but I don't see the Lightning getting any takers. His no trade clause kicks in on July 1st which is going to make Killorn that much harder to move going forward. All be it the Lightning lose a good player for nothing but the get some cap flexibility both now and going forward with his contract off the books.

Trades

Jonathan Drouin and Andrej Sustr to Nashville for Ryan Ellis, Dante Fabbro and a 2017 3rd round pick

The Preds have been interested in Drouin for the past couple of seasons now and could use some more scoring depth. The Preds have a good group of forwards but they lack some firepower outside of their top line. Adding Drouin with Fiala on the 2nd line should give the Preds a potent 2nd scoring line.

The Lightning could probably land a better defenseman for a deal involving Drouin but the deal would the Preds makes more sense. For the Lightning Ellis is a player entering his prime coming off his best season to date and having a solid postseason as well. He's exactly the type of defeseman the Lightning have needed for quite some, a righty shot puckmoving, offensive defenseman. He also is cost controlled as he only carries a $2.5 mill cap hit for the next 2 years.

The Lightning also net one of Nashville's top prospects in the deal. Fabbro was the 17th overall pick in last year's draft. He's an all round defenseman who is mature well beyond his years.. Fabbro is rated as the Preds 3rd/4th best prospect and many feel he could be NHL ready as soon as the 2018-2019 season. The Lightning also pick up an additionally 3rd round pick in the deal.

Jason Garrison to Calgary for 2017 6th round pick

The bolts will look to move Garrison out who He has 1 year left on his deal at $4.6 mill. The bolts will need to retain salary in the deal to make it happen but they need to move Garrison in order to move his salary and obtain an upgrade on the blueline. I think a young playoff contention team like the Flames or Senators could use a little depth on the blueline and in the process try and acquire a veteran with playoff experience.

Pending UFA's & RFA's
Ondrej Palat signs a 6 year deal worth $33 million ($5.5 AAV)
Tyler Johnson signs a 5 year deal worth $26.25 million ($5.25 AAV)
Peter Budaj signs a 2 year deal worth $3 million ($1.5 AAV)
Jake Dotchin signs a 2 year deal worth $2.5 million ($1.25 AAV)

Ondrej Palat will net the biggest contract this summer for the bolts. Palat struggled earlier on in the season but found his game down the stretch and was one of the Lightning's best player. Palat is just a solid all around player who can do it all. Yzerman will want to keep him a bolt for a long time.

Johnson is another key member for Yzerman to try and lock up long term. Johnny has struggled with injuries that so his numbers have been slightly down but he's still a very good 2nd line center who can play all situations.

Budaj helped the Kings to remain in contetion when Quick went down. He's been bounced around bit is still a solid backup goalie who can provide veteran leadership to Vasi as well as carry the load if needed as shown last year.

Dotchin was a real suprise when recalled, played better than anticaped but don't see the Lightning making a huge commitment to a player who is only 35 games into his NHL career.

Draft

14th overall pick Juuso Valimaki - Defenseman - Tri City Americans (WHL)

Mike Morreale NHL.com - Jan. 20th: "The two-way defenseman has brought more assertiveness to his game in his second WHL season. Valimaki (6-1, 204) has 39 points (12 goals, 27 assists) in 38 games and has shown more offensive drive and confidence in his game."

Jeff Marek of Sportsnet - Mar. 8th: "A good all-around blueliner who’s enjoyed great experience at the junior and international level. Not huge, but possesses great awareness. Has drawn comparisons to Olli Juolevi (VAN)."

FA

Michael Del Zotto signs a 4 year deal worth $15 mill ($3.75 AAV)
Justin Williams signs a 2 year deal worth $6 mill ($3 AAV)
Scottie Upshall signs a 2 year deal worth $2.5 mill ($1.25 AAV)

With the departure of Garrison the Lightning still have a whole on their defense to fill. Yzerman will try and make his defense more younger and mobile this offseason. Del Zotto hasn't lived up to expectation but he's a solid top 4 defenseman who can add some mobility and puck moving ability on the bolts blueline.

Williams has always been a consistent 2nd line player. He's coming to the end of his career but still has a few years left in the tank. With the losses of Boyle and Filppula the Lightning lost a lot a experience but with the addition of Williams they get a player who has played 140 playoff games and always produced in the big moment.

The addition of Upshall is to add some more grit on the 4th line. Upshall is another one who can provide some veteran leadership and experience to this group.

I don't like trading Drouin danny! he is the guy we could regret trading for 10 years. Now strong rumors out of canada have us trading Drouin for Alex Galchenyuk and a first round pick.
