lol you are very smart when it comes to hockey...except for anything that has to do with Pronger. I can understand why you would hate his contract, but not how you can hate him.

He's a guy you hate when he on the other team, not your own. Although, I will add that I've like Pronger throughout his entire career. He is the man.

he just wasn't as good as everyone said he was. i hate players that are over-rated. he was a shell of the hall of fame player that he was before he came to the flyers IMO (strictly defensively speaking)

I'll give you that he was no longer in his prime, but even then he was still one of the best, imo.

.............

Sometimes I wish everyone got to experience a concussion so they could fully understand how much they suck. I mean, I suppose we could just hit 'em all. But really post-concussion syndrome is like having a terrible migraine, vertigo, dementia, and bipolar disorder all at once for some of these guys. BUT YEAH, I'LL TAKE SOME TIME TO TALK TO YOU ABOUT IT.

My tally was/is at 4.

There are not many things on earth LESS fun, actually.

Well, if you wanna be particular about it, alcohol upsets your brain in a similar manner...only difference is you can recover from that once it's out of your system and your brain is given a few hours+ (unless your an alcoholic). Alcohol is much more of a chemical issue, but most research suggests that the lasting issues from concussions are chemical as well.

Be careful if those are significant ones...I tend to regard the "danger zone" as anything beyond 4 or 5. Which is probably all professional athletes. From my experience it just seems so much easier to get that next one than before.

I've had 2 for sure and only suffered for about 2-3 days after each one. Lucky that way.

I'm hoping I won't be having anymore. Coming to and not knowing what the hell is going on is a terrible feeling.

Two were classified as Major (back then) would be grade 3's probably now.

The other two were not really bad, but yeah I won't get on any bike or out on the ice without a helmet any more.

The first one was a major and was kind of missed because of all the other treatment I required at the time (Broken Jaw, Dislocated jaw hinge, Dislocated shoulder, 28 stitches and lots of blood loss). It was only after two days in the hospital did they realize something else was wrong (cognative ability was WAY off). The next one (minor) was a few months later, and probably was because I wasn't fully healed from the first. Relatively small bump for that one. Clipped my head on a tree branch racing bikes through the woods and went down like a rock. Stayed awake but had no idea what the hell was going on for a bit.

Then I was good for two years and had two more in the span of 8 months.

Geeeez man. The issue with hospitals (generally) and concussions is they don't know what to do with them. Your every day MD who's not in ortho/sports med doesn't know what to say...they do a CT, if there's no bleed, there's nothing they can do for you, and they send you on your way. Also: they no longer classify concussions at all. Grading (though some old school people do) is obsolete. That's really new though. My freshman year we learned the Cantu scale, etc. Grade 3=loss of consciousness, etc. BUT, the research shows that it's actually a quicker recovery to lose consciousness (think a computer overheating and shutting off to protect itself). So, these days all concussions are deemed serious until symptoms go away. After that, you slowly progress into physical activity or breaking a mental sweat.

I got no beef with the hospital on that one, but I hear what you're saying. It's a little more complicated than "look, an open wound. Close it."

But that hospital took care of me just fine. See, after the bail (and I woke up) I went home, laid on the couch in and out of consciousness for about 4 hours before my my got home and got the EMTs.

With the litany of injuries I went in with, it didn't bug me that they missed anything.

Live by the sword, die by the sword?

Ehh... there was a time I would be happy to see Pronger suffer a career ending injury. Concussions aren't really how I want to see someone go, even if he did dole out his fair share of head shots in his day.

Yeah, didn't mean that at all. They take care of the important/life saving situations, just noting how often concussions are missed because of that. I've seen ER docs tell a kid (who was quite clearly concussed) that they didn't have one. He had a headache, disorientation, photophobia, etc. Yeah, he's dandy. But, that's just the system. Pass the buck when you need to.
