As long as he doesnt retire and keep the cap hit, I am not crushed

Yeah, I said it. Fuck you.

I think two things here:

1. He will still fight for a roster spot every training camp. Now way does he just give up and hang them up.

2. For the contract we gave him that age, he owes us the ability to LTIR him for a few seasons. I know it will be frustrating, but t's something we NEED him to do if he doesn't want to fight for a spot.

I know Chris won't give up on his career just yet. I fully expect him to work as hard as possible to get in shape and healthy enough to avoid the LTIR

FUCK

I was just watching NHL Network and have determined that Pronger is not even hurt.

They said that the decision to pull the chute on the season was after he visited a doctor in Pittsburgh.

Duh.

Yes - it sucks.

Yes - Homer will go out and find a suitable replacement.

No - the world will not end and the Flyers will continue to win without Chris Pronger.

Agreed on all points.

What are the cap ramifications if he comes back next year but has to hang 'em up?

Really starting to think that it's time for drastic changes. Time for a complete ban on headshots. Incidental or intentional need to be handled. I know a lot of you guys won't agree, and that a portion of these wouldn't have been prevented with such a rule, but it's an idea that needs to be taken into account...90% of these are likely preventable. I know people keep saying that players need to be respectful of each other...but if they can't do that on their own, then the league needs to take action. This is ridiculous.

100 % OF THESE ARE PREVENTABLE. Don't play competitive hockey!!

Giroux, Crosby (recent), M. Michalek, etc. are all just byproducts of a fast, physical game with athletes who are scary fast, scary big, or both.

This problem will get resolved. In the early 90's it was all about how many NHLers were getting their ACLs and MCLs torn up. We don't hear about that now (to the point where MacQuaid can try to end a guy's season and get only a fine) because it's all about head injuries.

What is needed is a consistent enforcement of the rules (ALL OF THEM NOT JUST HEAD RELATED ONES) of the game and supplementary (severe) discipline for those who target the head.

This also leads to more powerplays/scoring. Win-win?

now everyone takes my side and says the flyers can win without pronger.. about damn time guys, i've only been saying it for 3 years.. i dont want the guy to be hurt, but i'm not at all depressed about using his 4.9 mil cap hit elsewhere while he LTIR's for as long as bettman allows, or if they get an amnesty buyout for him in the new cba (if they go that route)

in a strict hockey sense, his 4.9 mil would be better spent elsewhere.

I'm not sure that many people really held Pronger in that high regard when he went to Philly. Remember all of the threads about him shutting down the star forwards of the East? That wasn't exactly the case.

The Flyers aren't a trap team, they're offensive-minded - even on the PK. So I'm on board with you, Awaz. Pronger was the leader, but they'll replace him and move on.

Okay, the reason that ACL/MCL injuries aren't as big of a deal is because of strength and conditioning coaches and a VAST difference in surgical repair. An athlete can come back from ACL/MCL reconstruction in 5 months now if it peak shape before hand. That's 10 months less than it was in the 90's. A head injury is SO MUCH WORSE than a knee injury. Athletes don't get it yet, and I hope they do soon...because tearing your ACL is NOTHING compared to a severe concussion. ACLs are an EASY rehab, concussions there is NO rehab. Big difference. We have to work with what we know about them, because we don't know everything, still a big mystery. I agree that enforcement would help, that's the first step...but if that's not working now (lot of blame on the league), then ban is the next step. There's gotta be a culture change now.

Alot of the time that just isn't true.

Daniel Alfredsson was concussed this year and missed 4 games. MANY concussions are resolved very quickly. I've had 2 whose symptoms vanished within 72 hours never to return.

Yes, head injuries have the potential to linger longer than knee injuries, but TONNES of NHL players past and present have had their quality of life affected by leg injuries. They are nothing to scoff at.

The overall safety of the players needs to be considered, not just one body part (the last year it's been the head).

Are we even sure that there are more head injuries this year or were the previous ones just not taken seriously enough?

I agree, but what I'm saying is concussions are more detrimental beyond just the sport. Post-concussion syndrome leads to some nasty side-effects (depression, memory loss, loss of focus, constant headaches), while a bad knee injury could end someones career (honestly it takes multiple of those or just bad rehab, IMO) it doesn't effect life outside of it that much. Sure, it could lead to depression because of the lost career, or some limited mobility/pain, but it's not to the degree of post-concussion. Concussions are my soap box though, so I'll always be up on that box.

I think it's the latter more than anything. Combination of player education (ie. they're telling people they have headaches/dizziness now because they see what's happening to others who didn't) and MDs stepping up and following their gut, being a little more conservative. I'm a conservative when it comes to many injuries I admit, but pro-leagues need a bit more of that.

Any word on if the force of Dean McAmmond's vicious attack on Pronger's elbow with his head had anything to do with the concussion?
