"Matt Kalil (6-foot-6 5/8, 308 pounds) solidified himself as the player who will be the first non-quarterback drafted in April during Southern California’s pro day on Wednesday.
Kalil’s arms measured at 34 5/8 inches, good for a 80 1/8-inch wingspan. He stood on everything he did at the NFL Scouting Combine, and I believe that this draft will mark the first time in league history that one school has had two offensive linemen picked in the top 10 in back-to-back years. Tyron Smith was picked ninth overall by the Cowboys last year.
All 32 teams showed up for USC’s pro day, and 18 players were there along with six former Trojans.
Rhett Ellison, TE (6-4 7/8, 251) — His father was a player at USC and played in NFL. Ellison was used as a FB last season but probably will be moved back to tight end in the NFL. He grades out as a third-day selection. He ran 4.75- and 4.81-second 40-yard dashes, had a 32 1/2-inch vertical jump, 9-foot-3 broad jump, 4.40-second short shuttle and 7.16-second 3-cone drill. He also worked out in individual drills.
Chris Galippo, LB (6-1 3/8, 239) — He ran 4.8 and 4.81 in the 40. He was at the combine.
DaJohn Harris, DT (6-1 3/8, 304) — He ran 4.96 and 5.06 in the 40, had a 29-inch vertical, 8-8 broad jump, 4.66 short shuttle, 7.65 cone drill, and did 28 reps in the bench press. He did all position drills. He’s a third-day guy. Harris said Wednesday, according to ESPN Los Angeles, that he was not permitted to work out at the combine last month because doctors found a small hole in his heart during a physical in Indy. Harris said his agent has emailed all 32 NFL teams, informing them of his status and giving him the OK to work out.
Nick Perry, DE (6-2, 270) — He cemented his position as a first-round pick after working out very well in position drills. Perry can play with his hand on the ground and as well as in space. He looked very smooth and can play in either a 3-4 or 4-3 scheme.
Christian Tupou, DT (6-2 1/8, 294) — He did not do the shuttle, cone drills or the vertical jump. He ran a 5.30 and 5.40 in the 40 with a 7-8 broad jump. He bench pressed 225 pounds 37 times.
Marc Tyler, RB (5-10 1/8, 218) — He ranks as a priority rookie free agent. He ran 4.70 and 4.76 in the 40, had a 9-7 broad jump, 4.65 short shuttle and 7.33 cone drill. He did not do any strength lifts.
Brandon Carswell (6-1, 201), who was USC’s third wideout last year, also deserves mention. Carswell was behind WRs Robert Woods and Marquise Lee, two likely first-round picks whenever they declare for the draft.
Carswell ran 4.49 and 4.51 in the 40, had a 34-inch vertical, 9-4 broad jump, 4.29 short shuttle, 7.04 cone drill, and 18 bench press lifts. I think he had a great workout that probably will get him drafted. Carswell is a big target with great hands who can jump.
There was another medical issue at USC as DT Armond Armstead (6-4 7/8, 285) was told by the school that he could not work out because of a legal liability involving an undisclosed medical condition that prevented him from playing in 2011. Armstead told teams that he would give them all his medical records so their own doctors could make evaluations."
