That works a lot in show business, but not so much with small business. Again, look no further than the car dealership who LOST business because they made a similar poor decision. But hey! All that negative publicity was worth it, right? (Well, it helped a competing dealership at least).

I've expended enough energy on this.

Simple question: do you think this will hurt business at Odyssey 1?

The company updated their FB page to cover their ass.

This statement was posted to their FB page 17 hours ago. That is after the incident. What a bunch of bullshit.

"To show support for The Seattle Seahawks on game day, our employees may choose to wear a Seahawks Jersey in place of our standard uniform, which is required. To prevent any possible conflicts, the option of wearing other teams’ jerseys is not allowed. The employee reported to work in an unauthorized uniform and was asked to change into a standard uniform. Soon after he left to change into an accepted uniform, we received a phone call stating that he was not returning to work, leaving his position unfilled and creating extra stress for the staff covering his job on a busy weekend day."

In other words, the store is sticking up for the manager. I guess they don't view his decision as that terrible.

They are clearly doing posting this in response to what happened. Of course, who knows whether this was the policy given to the employees beforehand.

Because his manager said it wasn't.

Again, maybe, maybe not. Ever heard that any publicity is good publicity? I seriously doubt that this place is going to lose business because of this.

Well, they certainly are getting a lot of publicity over it and mostly negative.

Whether or not it affects their business remains to be seen.

It's not that big of a deal in the scope of things.

But even a Lawyer who was asked about it for the Bleacher report article said it was pretty petty of the manager in his opinion, and he is a huge Seahawks fan.

My guess they are covering their ass, even if they do not need to.

He has no grounds for a lawsuit and he decided to quit.

The story here is public perception and the court of public opinion.

I find it telling that when the kid went home and told his dad, his father tried to call the owner to get an explanation and the owner would not return his call.

That right there shows me that the owner and manager -

A) Don't have the balls to confront the kids dad. If they felt they were in the right, they should have explained the policy to him when he asked. I would have. Common courtesy.

B) Are covering their ass because they did not make the policy clear when they announced it. If they had clearly said "Seahawks jerseys only" why refuse to talk to the kids dad and why update the FB page?

They are within their right to fire him. The fact that they backtracked, side stepped and dodged the kids dad tells me they screwed up in the first place.

They are within their legal rights but guilty of being douchebags.

Simple question: do you think this will hurt business at Odyssey 1?

I guess it depends.

Since it is in the SEA-TAC area, probably not much, but I can only speculate one way or the other.

Here is a speculation one way. The kid is the QB on his HS football team. If loyalties to the local football team are stronger than loyalties to the business than it could.

If the owner of the business is a local and well respected than maybe not. If the owner is a corporation and not locally or privately owned than the fallout could be worse.

If this was Texas, that place would close it's doors in a month if the HS QB on the local Football team got fired.

But ultimately, even if the manager just said jersey, and even if he did that assuming everyone was a Seahawks fan, and even if he was shocked to see a Broncos jersey there because he hadn't thought it all the way through, I still don't blame him for pulling the kid aside and saying that's not what I really mean, I need you to change it. I just don't view that as some horrible decision.

Here is where we will have to disagree. if the above scenario is true, and he did not specify what jersey then in my opinion, the manager made a mistake and won't admit that his policy was flawed.

Sending the kid home to change was him covering his ass because he screwed up.

The kid is a QB on the local football team. I seriously doubt he intentionally wore the jersey in defiance of the policy to piss off his manager. It sounded like he went home when told to and asked his dad for guidance. When the owner would not return his calls, he chose not to return to work.

I think they are covering their ass more than sticking up for their manager's decision.

Article misses the facts as usual. Employees were told they could wear jerseys in honor of Blue Friday (SEAHAWKS).

So he could either wear a Seahawks jersey or his normal attire which was required per his conditions of employment.

Broncos jersey does not = normal attire or Seahawks jersey. He was told to go home and change to normal attire and then the kid never came back to work. Fired.

When a boss says, "Friday is Hawaiian shirt day" that doesn't mean you show up bare chested with body paint symbols and a bone necklace on.

And the boss is running a business. Most of his clients (if not all) will be Seahawks fans and some people may get pissed and stop going. What if a person that worked for KPMG wore a Ernst and Young shirt to work.

Siding with boss on this one.

Now I don't disagree with the firing and support the business on that side of it considering the kid didn't come back. This is a fun center with kids just running around having a good time. The kid wearing a Bronco jersey shouldn't upset any of the business clientele. If it does then those people are pretty darn petty to be throwing a hissy fit over a stupid jersey being worn by a 17 year old kid. There are some places I agree it would not be appropriate to show up like this but again this is a fun center for kids being run by a bunch of teenagers.

Are these facts based on the FB post that was revised AFTER the story broke?

And your idiotic example has nothing to do with this case. It was still a poor decision on the part of management. Very similar case happened near Chicago. Salesman comes in wearing a GB tie. Sales manager fires the guy. Guy finds work at competing car dealership. Negative publicity generated sends would-be customers away from the first dealership and into the second dealership.

So, as a manager (or owner, or whatever), it's not very smart to risk losing business over something this minor. The odds of this place losing customers because of an employee wearing a Broncos jersey are FAR less than the odds of that place losing customers because of the news story. The reason the kid was fired doesn't matter. The press (and those hearing/reading the story) simply equate the firing to his wearing the jersey. Now, if the manager lets the kid stay, any publicity would be POSITIVE, and that can be played into increased patronage (at least temporarily). Would have a far bigger impact than the threat of losing a couple customers over the jersey.

And to top things off, the Seahawks weren't even PLAYING the Broncos yet. In fact the SB matchup wasn't determined until well after all this occurred. So the lunacy of this decision was just compounded. Very doubtful that any customers would be irritated at a Broncos jersey if the team is playing the 49ers.......

The bottom line is, the kid was fired because he wouldn't show up to work. Nothing to see here.

I felt like responding to that post. And it's a different day.

However, I will not discuss this further with you, as we obviously are destined to disagree.
