Broken ankles are sometimes better than a sprain if its a high sprain.

I'm not seeing Synder allowing $21m to ride the ridge - Griffin will start.
Definitely will start, but for how long? 10 Games in if the Redskins find themselves out of the playoff race and believe it's due to RGIII then Mike might play Kirk.
^What I'm hoping will happen at least. In my mind Kirk > Bob
But Harbaugh was happy to disclose Jacobs' injury is not as bad as initially feared after Houston Texans' cornerback Kareem Jackson hit Jacobs squarely on the knee with his helmet while his left foot was planted in the ground,
"He's going to miss a little time," Harbaugh said of Jacobs' injury, following the 49ers' 20-9 loss to the Texans at Reliant Stadium.
"I don't think it's anything . . . the ACL is good. The patella is good. It'll be some time, but we'll see. It's not the you-don't-come-back-from variety."
"Things look good, X-ray-wise, and it's calming down for him," Harbaugh said.
"It just twisted," James said. "I was actually blocking somebody and somebody hit me and I was planted, and my leg got caught. I went one way and the leg stayed put."
Jacobs and James updates:
According to NFL.com, Harbaugh told 49ers.com that Jacobs will miss some time but it wasn't an ACL injury.

Wheww, Bem wipes brow - Not great news, but better than I feared with Jacobs - Thanks for the post Three...
Well he didn't mention the MCL so I'm still a little concerned, that might make him miss the first half of the season while he is on the PUP
That's a good cautionary point. I don't think Jacobs, or James for that matter, are eligible for the PUP because they have practiced, so I think the only options for them is to be listed as inactive or go on the IR list. I "think" those are the rules...
