I think Chip is just one of those coaches who is better suited for the collegiate level. That isn't a bad thing because Nick Saban is arguably the best college football coach ever and couldn't cut it in the NFL either.

NFL roster sizes compared to the college roster size is a big reason why Chip's offense wouldn't work in the NFL.

But I wouldn't say Saban couldn't cut it. He got pissed when The Dolphins went against his wishes and picked Daunte Culpepper over Drew Brees and then went to Bama. Things might have been a lot different in the NFL for Nick had the team got Drew Brees like Nick wanted.

The process of recruiting and reloading every few years is different too. There usually isn't enough time to get all of the pieces together on these broken teams to lift them up out of the bottom of the league as well.
