its a great start when the sharks win and all of detroit, chicago, and vancouver lose! I could not have chalked it up any better!

Now if only LA can take game 2 and put the nucks in serious trouble. If the nucks and hawks fall out in the 1st round, then I would say the coast is as clear as it can be for the sharks. Obviously, I though the same when they faced Edm in 06 or calgary in 04. However, it would be reallly nice...

I wouldn't go that far Rules. The Preds and Yotes both gave the Sharks fits this year. I'd rather see the Sharks face either of Chicago or Detroit than Pheonix.

really? no thanks! I know that the sharks have struggled with the preds and phoenix (especially of late), but they are young, inexperienced, and less scary to me. the preds would be a real tough matchup, but I'll take my chances of phoenix any day. Yes, Smith is good. Yes, phoenix has stifled the sharks, but they are a carbon copy of stl, but with less offensive firepower. The have ekman-larsson who is like pietrangelo, and yandle like shattenkirk, but they dont have the forward depth that stl does. Vrbata took a big hit and did not return, and if he is less effective, then phoenix is even weaker. I think the sharks would beat phoenix is a 7 game series.

of course, the sharks can't play phoenix next round no matter what. if LA wins, they play Pho. If LA loses, the sharks play vancouver, so it's moot. however, the sharks could see the preds, and that would e exciting.

The preds have the big two on D, and they would be a handful, but again, the forward depth isnt there and neither is the big game, top end talent like chicago or detroit. The sharks-preds series would be a total toss up IMO. The sharks beat nashville early in the year, and lost one in OT early as well before havlat's injury. The only game the sharks lost vs. Nashville in regulation was during the horrific road trip without havlat, so I think the sharks have shown that they can play against the preds, especially with a full lineup. The preds are my choice for a 2nd round opponent because it would mean that LA won and Phoenix won.

I'll take a match up against teams with poor team defense and even worse goaltending over teams who play a stiffling system and great goaltending. Defense wins championships and the more you avoid the best defensive teams the better. I don't buy into the inexperienced angle with Pheonix, they have a lot of PO experience on that team. Maybe not as much as the Sharks but still enough that they shouldn't be listed as inexperienced.
