Interesting with a guaranteed 2015 contract of over $5M

It happens every year. Good football players get cut. Back in the old days, Landry turned over the bottom third of his roster every other year. It's a young mans game and something has be shown by year two. Thomas Everett was solid in Jimmy's first SB and gone the next.

Yeah, but $5M against the cap whether you are on the team or not usually keeps you in the mix when the team just picked up your 5th year option less than a year ago. I'm thinking there is more than meets the eye. Also, like RGIII with Wash, Cle is probably not happy they picked up this option at this point.

Seems like Danny Shelton made Phil Taylor expendable. The early returns on Shelton sound pretty impressive. That guy is Haloti Ngata 2.0. Young Haloti Ngata....

Wouldn't that be a deal where if he weren't signed until week 2 you could sign him for whatever?:noidea:
I believe he was given a 5th year option for a first rounder. That would basically mean he is on a guaranteed contract for this year that Cle has to pay him whether he is on the team or not and that they can't split up into two years for cap purposes by cutting him. He can sign for whatever he wants with no restrictions and still pocket the $5M from Cle. Being a vet FA if on the roster week 1 his contract becomes guaranteed, but we could sign him for the vet minimum if he agreed.

The mistake with Taylor was not releasing him before the end of the last NFL season. That would have removed the 2015 guarantee. Run-stopping DTs who provide little pass rush don't earn more than Taylor would have done under his 5th year option. Signing a 1 year replacement wouldn't have cost more and wouldn't have been a full salary risk if the player didn't pan out. Bad business by the Browns.

The corollary is we're not inside the Browns organisation and we don't know what was said by the GM and owner to the team. If either of them stood up in front of the team and said they'd look after Taylor's interests because 'they're all family and family sticks together' then that would tie their hands. I'm not saying that happened but it's possible. It's the Browns! (Shrugs shoulders).

I wonder how worried the Redskins are by RG3's 5th year option in 2016. They're stuck with his 4th year salary but will they risk a $16M injury payout if he can't play next season? It's not a huge risk but there seems to be little upside in RG3 now.
