I like your beard.
What a boring game. Lemaire, you suck (at producing exciting hockey).
Ok...maybe this is dumb, but if I'm Dan Bylsma, why not start this game with three guys initially on the forecheck? You know you don't play well against teams that play more conservatively. You are relying on speed and grit this game with little skill. Especially after that early first goal, I would be tempted to go for broke and rely on my goalie (yes, Johnny let up that early one, but he's generally solid), and we always have trouble with the 1-2-2 + puck-playing goalie. Just gamble. Set the tone yourselves instead of relying on them. Gamble the odd man breaks (and I say this because this is a team that is comfortable in the standings and playing without its two best players...I wouldn't generally advocate this).
Whew!! Talbo won the early part of that one.
Not impressed by whoever that was for NJ.
and that won't be called, i'm sure
I mean, it's hard to judge from our position exactly what the gameplan really was. But teams beat this system, and we consistently DON'T. That falls on the coach for finding a system that works against these type of teams. Sure, you can stick to your BS about "we gotta play OUR game and not deviate from that!" but, if your "game" doesn't work against a certain style, you won't win. It's clear to me that unless this team gets to their game early and often, they don't win. They apparently can't make adjustments.
I think it would have been worthwhile for Disco to change it up, tonight. Once they put the forecheck on, low and behold, the opportunities started to happen.
IMO, they just weren't physical enough to start the game. Johnny let in a weak ass goal, and it rolled downhill from there.
I'm sure it doesn't make it any easier on the bench when you're without your best two forwards and playing from behind against a trap. The game was over by the end of the 1st period.
And, not to say that the game is different if this happens, but WHY is Fleury out? This is a light part of our season. There are 2 more games until the AS Break, and even though Marc will be there, it's not like it's strenuous. He's been playing great, and I can say with great confidence that he'd play that first shot a long better than Beej did.
Someone told me at work BJ was starting, and I couldn't believe it. Don't get me wrong - for my money, BJ is one of the most reliable backups in the league. But Marc was coming off a great performance, and I assumed he would get the start. The staff puts a little too much emphasis on making sure the backup is getting playing time. Yes, the backup needs to play in certain situations to give the starter time off, and they seem to think there will be a benefit in allowing the backup to stay "fresher", but BJ has been a backup for most of his career. It's not like he doesn't know what it's like.
That being said, not saying it would changed the outcome of the game. It was just perplexing to me.
I question why Dan didn't have Staal centering the top line with Duper and Kunitz. Letestu could have centered the 3rd line, and Jeffery could have been used on the 2nd line.
And I agree, the D played a very cautious game, tonight. But, going up a against a tender like Marty, who loves to push the puck up ice, you have to be ready to retreat fast into your own zone.
Hey Evolver, I thought scoring wasn't the problem? :p
