Offing him for a whole year. Geesh, what torture. What... delicious... torture! I kid.

Why are the Pens offering now? Doesn't that create waiver issues they wouldn't have in a couple days? Or are they trying to close something so they can wrap up or not pursue another contract based on what he says? I'm curious if anyone has any insight as to the timing.

It'll be a handshake deal... both side agree but nothing in writing until 7/1... I think this is how it works.. if jagr accepts.

I just was poking around the Post Gazette site and hurried back and was beaten to the post! I'm surprised that the offer occurred before July 1st since I thought if he accepts an offer before then he has to clear waivers or something. But who knows... maybe it's a special case because he wasn't in the NHL the last few years.

As long as Jagr doesn't sign until July 1st, there are no waiver issues. He will essentially be a free agent. However, unlike other players who are becoming free agents on July 1st, Jagr can hold contract negotiations with whoever he wants, as nobody in the NHL currently holds his rights.

So yeah, they could shake on a deal, and then wait until July 1st to sign.

That makes more sense. But why would the Pens release this information? Wouldn't that just increase pressure from competitors?

Or maybe he told them he only wants to play in Pitt., which I could understand.

I'm wagering they're looking to get confirmation that he's a piece of the team so they know what type of money they have to work with on signing some of the other players prior to July 1st.

That, and maybe it's something of a PR thing to get public support in favor of the deal to help encourage him to take a little less than peak value to come back to a place he's familiar.

Either way, it's a good tactic to leak this. If other teams know Pittsburgh's offering Jagr a contract, they might suspect it's a reasonable price, which could start up a little bidding war.

If Jagr is serious about playing in Pittsburgh no matter what, this means other teams are needlessly and pointlessly focusing energy on him, which detracts from their ability to plan effectively for free agency, giving the Penguins an edge over those teams. If he follows the money, it could result in someone overpaying for him, which takes away cap space for other signings.

One of the biggest components about being a GM which is never talked about is the ability to play other GMs against each other, set the market in a way that either benefits your team or screws other teams, or somehow influencing teams to screw themselves over with a bad contract.

I'm hoping it's less than 2 million. I'd be alright with 2 and change, anything above 2.5 is too rich for the Pens cap. I wish Ray luck

Agreed.

Let's give him Dupuis money. :D

And that may be all he's worth. The guy is 39. I'm not saying he couldn't pull a Teemu Selanne like run, because lord knows Jagr has other-worldly talent, but I just don't know if he has the legs to do that.

Superstar status will get him more than that, I feel. I'm feeling 2.25 million.
