Kevin Haplea is gone, most likely to FSU.

With all the recruits sticking to Nittany Blue, losing the guys who weren't going to be on the same page will only make that group stronger. You might have more guys who were walk-on calibur recruits starting on your team in 2017 when you take your shot at the postseason, but speaking as a Wisconsin fan, I have to say, that really doesn't mean that they'll play like walk-on recruits.

Jim Leonhard was a walk-on for us, he started as a freshman and had a pretty good pro career despite his size.

One of our top receivers, Luke Swann was a walk-on, would have had a Senior Bowl worthy senior year until he was hurt.

Our current #1 receiver Jared Abbredaris was a walk-on hurdles champion.

Tom Burke is our all time single season sack leader with 22, despite JJ Watt coming through the program, and he was a first team All American.

JJ Watt walked on to play for his home team, a decision he made over playing for Western Michigan with a scholarship. He chose to work at Pizza Hut and take student loans instead. Got his scholly later.

And those are just the guys who come to mind right away. Walk-ons can kick some ass if they are given the chance to grow.

A few walkons here and there are one thing

20+ any given year is another entirely - the vast majority of them are going to suck.

Right. But if they continue to get a handful of 4-5 star recruits every year who are going to play without scholarships....I'm saying that they might have a shot to do something special their first year back.

Ehhh. I wouldn't necessarily say they will suck, just might not be what PSU is used to (in terms of 4-5 star guys). They will get plenty of guys who likely wouldn't be offered schollies by PSU during other circumstances but plenty of primo MAC/C-USA type talent will be available for the taking. They will still have some scholarships to give out, so they need to make the most of them and get upper echelon linemen. A very good Oline (and Dline to a degree) can make mediocre skill players look real good. They need to pick and choose some very good walk-on prospects and hope they pan out. The challenge for O'Brien will be to recruit the right kids who they will have a shot with, and who might have alot of potential, but is underrated (at least in their minds). They won't be able to land boatloads of 4 star recruits, maybe no 5-stars for the next few years. His plan hopefully is to keep the ship afloat, and not slip into Indiana type mediocrity and lose the fan base. Big10 championships and MNC type years is out of the question for awhile..Its kind of like NCAA baseball recruiting. The good coaches and teams recruit the best kids, who aren't going straight to AA-AAA ball after they graduate high school.

Which leads me to a question more in line with the thread (for you PSU guys)..any rumors on the guys who supposedly have talked to Beams/VT? Have heard some names thrown out there, but nothing confirmed by the media..

Sorry, I just don't see it. No 4-5 star talent wants to play for pretty much nothing.

I think it will take them a few years to get back. But I have no doubts with good coaching that they will be back.
