In 2004 the NYY had the highest payroll at 182M. For comparison sake, the next highest payroll was 125M. I don't know if one player ate up a lot of that payroll or not but I do know that they needed that much to make baseball history!!

Do you know what the Yankees did after suffering that historic collapse? They got mad. I mean REALLY mad and the next year they went out and increased their payroll to 205M dollars! For comparison, the next closest payroll dropped to 121M dollars. The result? The Yankees didn't even make the ALCS. They lost in the first round of the playoffs.
