So if he gets injured say for two games then the Pats do not have to pay the $33,333,33 is that what I read?

Revis gets a $10 million signing bonus, a $1.5 million base salary and $33,333.33 for the first 15 games he’s active for in 2014

So essentially unless they rework the deal Revis is going to be $5 million in dead money next year. So they are paying him $12 million this year and $5 million next year and getting 16 games out of him plus playoffs. So $17 million in total for one year's worth of play.

Umm...I don't get this or how it works, but what ESPN Boston says is, He's paid 1$12m this year, but his cap hit is only $7m with the remaining $5m a cap hit next year.

So they pay him $12M, but they still have cap space....

Essentially the Pats did what the Broncos did last year with DRC. You sign a guy to a 2-year deal knowing the 2nd year is going to be voided. This allows a team to spread out the Signing bonus over two years instead of one lowering the Cap Number for year one. So no matter what the Pats are going to be counted at least $12 million against the Cap. They are just making it $7 million this year when Revis plays then in a way pay him $5 million next year to not play a snap.

Teams can get away with doing this with one or two players but any more than that and you are setting yourself up for some major dead money.

Ahh!!!
$10 mil signing bonus is paid now, money in Revis's pocket, but the cap hit is spread over two years, because it is a two year contract. $7m this year with his Roster bonus and base salary, $5m next year if he is not optioned.

Now you're getting it! I had actually never seen a team do this before last year when the Broncos did it with DRC. It somewhat makes sense but I can see why it will get a team in trouble real quick. Look no further than the Cowboys turning all of the Cap Hit Romo was supposed to have this year into a signing bonus. Sounds very nice for this year where he has a low cap number but man when that money comes due later they are going to be kicking themselves. You can only kick the can so far before you run out of road to kick it down.

Its a club option:suds:

Darrelle Revis' "one-year," $12 million contract with the Patriots includes a club option for a second year.
USA Today's Tom Pelissero reports the Patriots would have to pay Revis a $12 million roster bonus on April 1 of 2015, before a $7.5 million base salary plus $500,000 in per-game roster bonuses in order to keep him for a second season. Rather than exercise the option, New England would likely negotiate a long-term deal with Revis if he meets their standards of on- and off-field performance in 2014. But it's clear this could be more than a one-year marriage.

They would still have to cover the $5 million signing bonus at some point. You have to realize that Revis signed for $12 million and to him that is at least his value so he is not going to take a $5 million cut just to try and get things to even out.

If I had to guess the Pats will try to lessen that blow if they sign a long term deal by spreading that out over say a 4-5 year period. So he would be making about $1.25 million more per year than one would think but that is to help soften the blow some. So it would be like instead of him getting to sign for 4 years $12 million a year he would be signing for a 4 year $13.25 million contract. Looks like he is getting overpaid but it is just trying to make up for the Cap break they are getting this year.

An important wrinkle has been learned about the contract Darrelle Revis has agreed to with the Patriots.

It has widely been reported as a one-year, $12 million deal, which is accurate. Revis will earn $12 million this season.

But for salary-cap accounting purposes, and to protect Revis from being assigned the franchise tag in 2015, the sides have added a second year to the pact in 2015 that would pay Revis $20 million and count $25 million against the salary cap.

The $20 million is an astronomical figure, as is the $25 million cap charge. That makes it unlikely the Patriots would pay it, thus making Revis an unrestricted free agent in 2015 or one of the highest-paid players in football.

The second year helps the Patriots spread out the salary-cap charges for Revis over two seasons instead of taking one $12 million salary-cap hit in 2014. Revis' cap charge for 2014 is now $7 million.

Here is a breakdown of the deal for those into specifics:

2014
Cap value: $7M
Cash value: $12M
Signing bonus: $10M
Roster bonus: $500K ($33.33K per game if on 46-man roster up to 15 games)
Base salary: $1.5M

2015
Cap value: $25M
Cash value: $20M
Roster bonus-1: $12M (earned on April 1, 2015, if club exercises option prior to end of 2014 league year)
Roster bonus-2: $500,000 ($33.33K per game if on 46-man roster up to 15 games)
Base salary: $7.5M

First off Bronco fans are not pissed off at this. Kind of comes with the territory that you start an arms race others are going to add to their arsenal. Second by you saying him signing for less are you meaning in overall money of the contract cause well yeah a 6 year contract is going to usually be for more money than a 1 year contract? Now if you are talking on a yearly basis Revis' contract blows Talib's out of the water. He is still the highest paid Cornerback in the NFL even with the little bit of a pay cut.

No, I am saying "pissed" because Revis agreed to a very short term deal where the Broncos had to give Talib a longer contract for more overall money

Not quite true...The Broncos actually have the ability to void the Contract after one year with only a $4 million dead money cap hit (Revis is already a $5 million Cap hit whether you resign him or not for next year). So say Talib just doesn't work out then the Broncos can just move on without him.

why are the Pats boards so dead:wtf2:

I dunno. Maybe one reason is that it's kind of a rule around here that you don't troll team boards and since the best organization in football is always gonna get flamed, much of the Pats talk/envy/shit stirring happens out on the general NFL and discussion boards.

Come the season, it'll pick up...and welcome man. I see a slew of Pats avatars from folks who came over from Fan Nation. Hope they drop in come game time.

Lot's of folks are propping the Pats on paper already. I'm a little more cautious than that but I do think Revis will be a key ingredient. You know there's all this talk of the Pats dynasty coming to and end and Brady losing some of his skills....well no shit, OF COURSE they're coming to the end and his skills are diminishing. This ain't the 2000s anymore.

That said and acknowledged, Brady won't win another Championship without a stout defense. His days of carrying them have passed. For as long as he plays he'll have flashes and stretches of premium play but in the one and done playoffs, it's gonna take a shut down defense for him to ever hoist the Lombardi. It's also gonna take some good fortune as it always does and it's gonna take a gritty one game at a time mindset like the Pats are known for.

I ain't looking past Miami~

Just a short MSN/Fox article on Revis. Typical shit stirring title to get ya to open it but he's sounding like he's getting ready.

Patriots not Revis' first choice -- Jets were | FOX Sports

Yup, nothing there. When I switched companies, I left doors open and kept in contact incase shit went stinky at the new place. I had been with the other company 15 years so it would have been the first place I went if I was in need of a job.
Same thing, humans like their known entities.

I cannot believe we signed the best CB in the last 20 years.

Yep and after that draft, the other free agents you got and with the arsenal of weapons you have on offense (ESPN says it's the best in the league) there's no reason you guise shouldn't bring the Lombardi back to Foxboro.
