When you have Tom Brady- the incentive to overpay in order win now is much less. To be fair though, Brady is getting up there and is one bad hit to the should to his 40 yearold self to being done.

‪Just in: @_sportstrust informed that Patriots' LB @zeus30hightower will not be given franchise tag. Hightower now expected to test market.‬

THE HITS KEEP COMING :suds:
local radio said that this morning. they mentioned a transitional tag as a possibility, first right of refusal.

Apparently they did similarly with McCourty 2 years ago.

They let him test the waters, and when he had offers they sat down and talked turkey and signed him to a contract that made him at that time the highest paid safety in the league.

this seems logical. I know it's the Pats but I can't see them letting Hightower leave
theyre doing what they did for mccourty and edelman...

let him test his value on the market and see. hes not going anywhere.

Certainly would be nice to have him stay for a few more years, but considering the percentage of snaps he has played in the last couple of years I'm not sure I want them dumping a max contract in his lap.

Hope they can make it work, it would suck to see Hightower making a boatload of money playing for a team that has zero chance of winning the SB, like Pittsburgh, Seattle, Arizona, Dallas etc.

This. Simple as that. They will look at what he is offered and make a call from there.

They did. I don't see this time it working out the way the Patriots want though. Hightower is good and gone

We shall see. I thought the reason to be rid of Collins and Jones was to free up $$ for Hightower.

Zero surprise. Hightower is not critical to that defense and he constantly battles some injuries. Some stupid team *COUGH CLEVELAND* will overpay him.

He's a strongside linebacker... I mean Seattle uses their SLB (3 LBer set) like 10-15% of the time... lol. Not sure about New England but I doubt they really care. Shed some extra cash, grab someone in the 4th and plug and play. This is quite possibly the biggest non news story I've seen posted on the Hoop in a while and I'd hardly call it a 'hit'. Probably more like a blessing that some dumbass team will overpay and the Pats pick up a compensatory.

I'd rather they free it up to pay Butler.
Agreed need to lock up Butler. Good cover corners are hard to come by. HT is a nice piece to the Pats D but he is replacable. Sign Butler and get a corner or safety early in the draft. NE will be fine. Especially if they can get one of the hybrid SS/LB types like Jabrill Peppers. This draft is so unpredictable at this point so hard to tell what players are going to be available? We couls see a run on QBs if teams panic as well as Oline. That could leave some players that graded out in top 15 to late in the 1st. Could be lots and lots of value at the end of 1 and thru top of the 2nd. Man let's get FA started I'm chomping at the bit.

Possibly but wouldn't they have tagged him already?

Well they have to do something that involves giving him more money than he made last year.

I think they can do both.

It's others who may suffer for it.

I just watched the Super Bowl again last night and Amendola was clutch. Lots of huge catches.

But he seems likes he's going to be window shopping next year.

They should just let him walk.

IMO, guy is as good as gone. He has his 2 rings, sat and watched good talented guys traded to shitty teams over contracts. The money for him is going to be there, and NE won't come close to what he is going to get. Some team is going to send him to the bank. This Patriots defense is going to look very different this yr....
