I think it had to do with bonuses and things like that. I know the salaries are set, but their bonuses are not.

1st round picks are 5 year deals.

Not necessarily true. They are a 4-year contract with a 5th-year option. The Seahawks for example have decided to not use the 5th year option on their linebacker they took a few years ago. So it is kind of like the ace in black jack in the contract really has two values and the team can decide which one they want to use.
