Long shots: 49ers offense hasn?t thrived with Kaepernick going deep more than any other QB ? 49ers Hot Read

fans have been wanting this for years, cause most were tired of the running game in prior seasons. I know we've been reading about going back to running, but that is only now after seeing our struggles this season.

we picked up Steve Johnson and more so our expectations rose.

Kaep's strength is throwing medium and long, between the 20's. So it made sense we would lean more on 'long' passing.

then with the enforcement of the 5 yard rule, the NFL is now a passing league. the 49ers would have to pass more than they have, just to keep up.

But after working on it all off-season, it doesn't pan out in the regular season??!!

even an OLD timer like me realizes its about passing now, so we have to look ahead and continue improving it. if it means replacing Kaep and linemen who can't pass protect, so be it.

Problem is we don't have WR's that can stretch the field and get separation. Stevie Johnson is a good WR, but he seems more like a possession type. We have a roster loaded with those. Crabtree, Johnson, Boldin. Vernon Davis was the best deep threat with speed and now he is struggling

I agree. We have some good possession receivers (really a great one in Anquan Boldin, who should be in Canton one day); however, safeties never have to worry about giving deep help against our offense.

At least Boldin is strong and can fight for some balls. The other WRs aren't doing that. We don't have speed or a big phyiscal WR that can win physical matchups.

Im telling you let Crabtree go and go get Cobb or Maclin. Hey if some how Dez becomes a FA go all in on him.

Kelvin Benjamin would have been a better addition than Ward. He would be very good in the red zone. It still upsets me that the Niners felt they did not need a receiver.

Both of those options are better than Crabtree. First, the Niners need to improve the OL. They can't pass protect. Next, Kap needs to improve on his touch and accuracy. Lastly, fire Roman. His playcalling has been predictable. OT: I was impress with the innovation of the Packers offense. They had Cobb line up behind Rodgers. Their offense utilizes the RB in the passing game.

I don't see the 49ers having the cap room to sign a major WR free agent. Brooks salary will be gone, but they also have some key free agents to resign. U

Agree except the Brooks part.

IMO WR isn't the major issue anyway, right now we have enough receiving talent. for me, it is first the QB's passing skill, next the pass protection starting with (not only) the O-line.

I think we have WR talent but we lack speed at WR. Need to draft and develop and WR that can stretch the field. No one on this roster can do that. Vernon Davis was that threat until this year

I agree with your assessment about Kap improving on his accuracy and improvement on the OL. After this season, Crabtree will likely be gone. Boldin cannot play forever though he's having another outstanding year. Lloyd best years are behind him and Johnson is a possession receiver. I agree with another poster that the Niners need a WR who can stretch the field. Teams that play the Niners know that they have no one that can go deep, so they stack the box and dare Kap to beat them. Kap has been able to beat the Giants and the Redskins (with the help of the defense), but against a good team like the Seahawks, Kap fails miserably.

I have no problem adding a WR should value be there.

btw - i look at it as just a good, overall starting WR, not a "deep threat", or somebody who can "stretch the field"? for me these descriptions indicate a 'specialist', like a 3rd or slot WR. a good starting WR can do almost anything, run almost any route.

I'm not advocating a WR that just plays on 3rd downs, but another receiver with above average speed. My biggest concern is that the Niners coaching staff have continuously failed to develop receivers. I don't have any confidence that they are able to evaluate talent at this position.

We need at least one guy who worries the opposing defense about getting beat deep because having such a player helps open up the intermediate and short routes. When we had Moss, he was more of a decoy than anything else, but apparently his presence helped. Vernon Davis used to be a deep threat, but for some reason he is not one this season. Maybe I've just missed it, but I haven't really seen any of our receivers show the ability to consistently get open deep this season.

we have 9 million in cap right now. Take Crabtree and Brooks off the books we have like 20 million to spend. Sign Iupati to about 5 million and that leaves us with 15 million. Gore comes off resign him for a little less so now we are at around 17 million.

We have plenty to sign a good WR. Im not worried about the cap. We are good.

getting off subject................looks like Crabtree will be gone, but not so sure on Brooks? We can't have enough quality OLB's, and IMO he can still be effective. So while I'm not proclaiming we have to keep him, wouldn't rush to get him off the books.

A good starting WR is not necessarily a deep threat. Boldin is good, but he is not a deep threat.

Yeah but we have Lynch and Skuta. trading brooks for draft picks would help us in the draft and in salary cap to free up more money. Plus will brooks be ok losing snaps to Lynch.

I do agree u can't have enough pass rushers but to be honest Brooks has been so so this year plus he has had a lot of penalties this year.

If you let Crabtree go, cut Gores pay, trade Brooks u can sign any of those WRs and then next year Boldin and gore would be off the books.

I think Brooks would be an outright release
